The Electrics That Power Everything Else

An engine will not start without a spark, without a fuel pump, without sensors telling the control unit what to do. Every modern car depends on its electrical system just as much as on its mechanical one. When something in the electrical system fails, the symptoms can be confusing - from a car that will not start, through warning lights on the dashboard, to things that work intermittently or not at all. That is where we come in.

Most Common Symptoms of Electrical Problems

  • Car will not start - the starter does not turn, no reaction to the key. More on possible causes in our guide car won't start, what to check.
  • Battery goes flat overnight - the car will not start in the morning even though the battery is relatively new
  • Battery warning light on the dashboard - a charging problem, usually the alternator or the drive belt
  • Intermittent faults - something works then stops, the radio turns off by itself, the instrument cluster flickers
  • Lights not working or dim - one or both headlights, position lights, brake lights
  • Window regulator not working - the regulator motor or the switch
  • Central locking not responding - one or more doors will not lock

What We Do

Electrical Diagnostics

Electrical problems require a systematic approach. We measure voltage, resistance and current on individual circuits. We trace the wiring until we find the break, short circuit or component that is not performing as it should.

Alternator and Starter Motor

The alternator charges the battery while the engine is running. When it weakens, the battery slowly drains and eventually the car will not start. The starter motor cranks the engine on startup. When it wears out, you hear a characteristic clicking or the engine does not turn over at all. More on the symptoms in our article alternator and starter motor failure symptoms.

Fuses and Relays

A blown fuse can knock out any consumer in the car. A faulty relay can do the same. It sounds simple, but sometimes the cause runs deeper - a short circuit that needs to be found before replacing a fuse that will just blow again. More on this in our guide fuses and relays, how to spot a blown one.

Parasitic Battery Drain

The car sits overnight and will not start in the morning. The battery is good, the alternator charges normally, but something in the car is drawing current while the engine is off. We find that consumer by measuring current and disconnecting circuits one by one. We cover this topic in detail in our article battery drains while the car is parked.

Wiring and Harnesses

Often the problem is in the wiring - a broken, burnt or corroded cable. Especially on older vehicles and in areas where the wiring is exposed to moisture and road salt. We repair and fabricate new harnesses when the originals are no longer serviceable.

Sensors

Modern vehicles have dozens of sensors - for temperature, pressure, speed, camshaft and crankshaft position, air flow, oxygen (lambda) and many others. When a sensor fails or sends the wrong signal, the car runs poorly. We test sensors on the vehicle and replace them when necessary.

Lights and Headlights

A burnt-out bulb, a headlight that does not work, low beams work but high beams do not, fog lights are dead. Sometimes it is the bulb, sometimes the switch, sometimes the wiring. We diagnose and repair the full vehicle lighting system.

Window Regulators and Central Locking

The regulator motor, switch, cable and guide rails. The same goes for central locking - actuators, switches, wiring. We repair or replace depending on what makes more sense.

Why Us

We work with vehicle electronics every single day. Installing an LPG system requires connecting to the car's electrical system - the control unit, injectors and sensors. That means we do not only deal with electrics when a fault appears; it is part of our daily work. That experience shows when it comes to diagnosing a problem that appears intermittently or is hard to pin down.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does an electrical diagnostic take?

It depends on the problem. Simple things like a blown fuse we find in a few minutes. A parasitic drain or an intermittent fault can require an hour or more of systematic testing.

If the car won't start, is it always electrical?

Not always, but most often it is. The battery, alternator, starter motor, fuses, fuel pump relay - these are all electrical components. We check them in order until we find the cause.

Do you replace batteries?

Yes. We test the battery condition and if it is at the end of its life, we can replace it. We also check whether the alternator has been charging properly, because a new battery will not last long if the alternator is not charging it.

Price of Electrical Work

It depends on what the problem is and how much time the diagnostics and repair require. For an estimate, let us know the symptoms and the vehicle model.

Something Not Working on Your Car?

If something odd is going on with the electrics, do not guess. Come in or call us - we will diagnose the problem and tell you what is needed and what it costs before we do anything.
