VVT-i and oil pressure on petrol engines

Hydraulic lifter tapping on cold start, check engine light, codes P1349 or P0011, mild power loss on acceleration.

Uzrok /On older 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 VVT-i engines the fine mesh filter in the VVT-i control valve clogs with oil sludge. Using lower grade oil and stretched oil change intervals are the main cause. The engine needs clean oil pressure for the VVT-i system to react on time.

Popravka /Removing and cleaning the VVT-i (OCV) valve, or replacement where needed. Fresh oil and filter using the grade Toyota specifies. After the service the engine goes back to normal and the light clears.

Water pump and thermostat on 2.0 D-4D and 2.2 D-4D

Coolant leaking below the engine, summer overheating, poor cabin heat in winter, temperature swings.

Uzrok /The water pump on the Avensis 2.0 and 2.2 D-4D usually lasts 150,000-180,000 km. The seal starts leaking and antifreeze drips onto the auxiliary belt. Toyota lasts long overall, but water pump and thermostat are preventive replacement items.

Popravka /Water pump and thermostat replacement, always together with the timing belt since the same belt has to come off for pump access. We use quality parts in line with OEM.

DPF filter on D-4D engines

DPF warning light, power loss, limp mode, higher fuel consumption after 150,000 km.

Uzrok /Toyota D-4D engines generally hold up, but the DPF filter follows the fate of all modern diesels - city driving and short trips clog it. On the 2.2 D-4D Avensis and Rav4 this is the most common issue after 150,000 km.

Popravka /Forced regeneration via diagnostics and, if that fails, removal and mechanical cleaning of the DPF. We explain to the owner how to drive to prevent a repeat - at least one longer open-road run per week.

Engine mounts and upper control arm bushings

Vibrations on pulling away and stopping, knocking over bumps, steering pull under throttle.

Uzrok /Toyota uses soft engine mounts for a quieter ride so the mounts degrade over time. On the Corolla and Avensis the upper front control arm bushings are also a known weak point after 100,000-120,000 km.

Popravka /Engine mount and arm bushing replacement. This is a cheap and quick job compared to what it solves - the car goes back to its original calm behaviour, with no knocking over bumps.

Clutch and gearbox input bearing on the Corolla MT

Gearbox noise at idle that disappears when the clutch is pressed, hard gear changes, clutch slip under acceleration.

Uzrok /The input shaft bearing on the Corolla E120 manual is a known weak point - it starts whining after 180,000 km. The clutch on the 1.4 and 1.6 petrols usually lasts well, but in taxi duty and mixed city driving it wears out sooner.

Popravka /Clutch replacement together with the input shaft bearing. Since the gearbox has to come off anyway, we also replace the release bearing. The Corolla is famous for doing another 100,000 km without complaints after this job.

Hybrid system and HV battery on Prius and Auris Hybrid

Reduced EV-only range, hybrid system warning, unstable behaviour in city driving, hybrid system error.

Uzrok /The high-voltage (HV) battery on the Prius 2 and 3 has a service life, typically 250,000-350,000 km. When one or more modules weaken, the whole system goes into limp mode. The HV battery cooling fan often clogs with dust, speeding up module ageing.

Popravka /Full hybrid diagnostics - we identify which modules are weak. In many cases, replacing individual modules and rebalancing the battery solves the problem. We clean the HV cooling fan preventively and teach owners how to maintain it.

Rear brakes and seized calipers

Higher fuel use, burning smell from the wheels, uneven braking, uneven rear pad wear.

Uzrok /On the Corolla and Avensis the rear calipers seize from corrosion, especially after winter road salt. The pads then never fully release from the disc and drag constantly. Toyota brakes are quality overall, but the rear axle is where you have to watch.

Popravka /Disassembly, cleaning and lubrication of the caliper slide pins. If the calipers are damaged, we replace them. We recommend a brake inspection at least once a year, especially after winter.

CVT gearbox noise and shudder on the Auris

Humming that grows with speed, shudder on pulling away, delayed acceleration, warning light.

Uzrok /The CVT gearbox on the Auris and some Corolla versions needs clean and proper ATF fluid at strict intervals. Owners often think the CVT is maintenance-free - the fluid degrades and the belt inside takes the damage.

Popravka /ATF change to the Toyota specification, gearbox condition diagnostics and adaptation. For more serious faults we arrange specialist repair. Prevention is far cheaper than a rebuild.
