    Injectors on 2.2 Skyactiv-D and MZR-CD engines

    Rough running, black smoke, hard cold starts, increased fuel consumption, knocking from the top of the engine.

    Uzrok /The Mazda 2.2 Skyactiv-D (CX-5, Mazda 6 GJ) and the older 2.0 MZR-CD (Mazda 6 GH, Mazda 3 BL) use piezo injectors that are sensitive to fuel quality. Local fuel quality varies, so injectors need inspection between 120,000 and 160,000 km. On the Skyactiv-D injectors are more expensive, making early checks worthwhile.

    Popravka /We run diagnostics and a return-flow test per cylinder. If only one injector is faulty, an overhaul is cost-effective. Replacing the copper washers and cleaning the seats is always part of the job.

    DPF filter on diesel Mazda

    DPF warning light, power loss, car enters limp mode, increased fuel consumption.

    Uzrok /Mazda diesels, especially the Skyactiv-D, have a sensitive DPF system. Short city trips do not allow regeneration, the filter clogs and the engine loses power. On older MZR-CD engines the problem is similar but less pronounced.

    Popravka /A forced regeneration with diagnostic equipment is the first step. If the filter is severely clogged we clean or replace it. We recommend regular open-road driving at least once a week.

    Corrosion on older models (Mazda 3, 6)

    Visible rust on sills, inner fender panels, door edges and around wheel arches.

    Uzrok /Older generations of Mazda 3 (BK, BL) and Mazda 6 (GG, GH) have a known weakness in body corrosion protection. On local roads with winter salting, rust appears as early as 7 to 10 years, especially on the lower body panels.

    Popravka /We inspect the underbody and advise owners on the condition. For corroded mechanical parts (brackets, mounts) we do replacements. We recommend rust-proofing treatment as a preventive measure on newer examples.

    Dual-mass flywheel on diesel engines

    Knocking and vibrations at idle, especially when the engine is cold, juddering when moving off in first gear.

    Uzrok /The dual-mass flywheel on 2.0 MZR-CD and 2.2 Skyactiv-D engines is durable but not eternal. After 150,000 to 200,000 km the internal dampers weaken and vibrations appear. City driving with frequent starts from standstill accelerates wear.

    Popravka /Flywheel replacement is done together with the clutch because access is the same. We always recommend replacing both at the same time - the labour cost difference is minimal and the saving on future disassembly is significant.

    Timing chain on petrol engines

    Metallic rattle on cold start, check engine with timing-related codes, unstable idle.

    Uzrok /Mazda petrol engines (1.6, 2.0 MZR and Skyactiv-G) use a timing chain that lasts a long time but is not permanent. On older MZR engines (Mazda 3 BK/BL, Mazda 6 GG/GH) the chain can stretch after 180,000 to 220,000 km, especially if oil changes have been neglected.

    Popravka /We replace the chain, tensioner and guides. On Mazda MZR engines the access is relatively straightforward. After replacement we recommend shorter oil change intervals.

    Mazda has an earned reputation for reliability - but only with regular maintenance. Skyactiv engines are precise and do not tolerate neglect.

    On Skyactiv-D and MZR-CD diesels change oil every 10,000 km. Injectors and the turbo need clean oil, and local fuel quality demands shorter intervals.

    If you drive a Mazda diesel mostly in the city, take the car on the open road for 20 to 30 minutes at least once a week so the DPF can regenerate.

  4. 04 /

    Check older Mazda 3 and 6 for corrosion before buying - inspect the sills, fender liners and underbody. Rust on Mazda is a structural weakness, not a sign of a bad owner.

  5. 05 /

    Petrol Mazda 2, 3 and 6 are good LPG conversion candidates. The Skyactiv-G engine has high compression but runs well on LPG with the right system.

  6. 06 /

    Do not ignore flywheel knock when it starts - delaying makes the repair more expensive because the clutch gets damaged too.

Q /Which Mazda engine do you repair most often?
The most common are the 2.0 MZR-CD on the older Mazda 6 GH and Mazda 3 BL, and the 2.2 Skyactiv-D on the newer CX-5 and Mazda 6 GJ. Among petrol engines we see the 1.6 and 2.0 MZR on older generations.
Q /Is Mazda expensive to maintain?
Not particularly. Parts are more affordable than the German competition, and the engines are durable. The weak spots on older models are body corrosion, and on diesels the DPF in city use.
Q /Do you work on Skyactiv engines?
Yes. We service both Skyactiv-G petrol and Skyactiv-D diesel. Diagnostics, injector service, DPF, turbo, oil and filter changes are all within our scope.
Q /Can you fit LPG on a Mazda 3?
Yes. Mazda 3 with a petrol engine is a good LPG conversion candidate. Installation, homologation and regular LPG system service are all done at our workshop.

The most common causes are a clogged DPF filter, worn injectors or a turbo problem. Computer diagnostics are the first step to identify the exact cause.
