Timing chain guides on N47 diesel
Metallic rattle from the back of the engine on cold start, later timing error and loss of power.
Uzrok /Plastic timing chain guides wear out, the chain stretches and begins to slap against the cover. A well known weak point of the N47 engine.
Popravka /Replacement of the full timing set - chain, guides, tensioner and sprockets. On BMW the job is done from the back of the engine. We do it with OEM parts.

BMW needs quality oil. Stick to the specified viscosity and change it on schedule, not on the dashboard reminder.
- 02 /
If you see any sign of overheating, stop immediately. BMW engines do not forgive driving with the temp light on.
- 03 /
On older diesels avoid short city trips - EGR and DPF clog fast and repairs are expensive.
- 04 /
Check oil level manually, not only electronically. Valve cover gaskets often leak without warning.
- 05 /
If the engine stutters or misfires, check the ignition coils first. That is the most common cause on BMW petrol engines.
- 06 /
On N47 diesels listen for metallic noise from the back of the engine on cold start - early sign of chain guides.
- 07 /
OEM or proven quality parts pay off. Cheap copies almost always cause new problems on BMWs.
