Common Faults of Nissan Qashqai J11 1.6 dCi

From our workshop, these are the faults we see most often on the Nissan Qashqai J11 with the R9M 1.6 dCi engine. Real symptoms, causes, and advice.

About this model

The Nissan Qashqai J11 is the second generation of the model that practically invented the compact crossover segment. It has been produced since 2013, and it arrives in BiH en masse as a used import from Western Europe - most commonly from Germany, Italy, and France. A typical example on our roads has 150,000-250,000 km and comes with either the 1.5 or 1.6 dCi diesel engine. The model is popular for its spacious interior, high seating position, and solid equipment, but the 1.6 dCi R9M engine brings specific problems that 1.5 dCi owners never encounter. In Banja Luka and the surrounding area, we see this model in the workshop every day. If you want to know what else we do on Nissan vehicles, check out our brand page.

Engines and variants

This model is most commonly found in BiH with the following engines.

R9M 402 (130 HP): The stronger version of the 1.6 dCi engine with 130 HP and 320 Nm of torque, paired with either a 6-speed manual or Xtronic CVT gearbox. Produced from 2014 to 2017. This variant is more prone to timing chain and turbocharger issues due to higher stress on components at increased power output. It is the most popular choice for buyers wanting a more dynamic drive, but also costlier to maintain.

R9M 409 (130 HP, Euro 6): The Euro 6 version with an additional SCR system and AdBlue injection - same engine block but stricter emission controls. Produced from 2016 to 2019. On top of all the problems it shares with the R9M 402, this variant brings additional concerns around the AdBlue system, where the level sensor and heater in the tank frequently fail. Parts for the AdBlue system are available, but they add another item to the maintenance list.

K9K 636 (1.5 dCi, 110 HP): The smaller and more commonly chosen engine with a belt-driven timing system, known for reliability with regular maintenance. Produced throughout the entire J11 lifecycle, from 2014 to 2019. The K9K is generally the more reliable choice because it uses a belt instead of a chain and Delphi injectors that tolerate local diesel better. This engine is covered on a separate page on our site.

Reliability and reputation on the BiH market

The Qashqai J11 is a solid vehicle overall, but the 1.6 dCi variant carries more risk than the more popular 1.5 dCi version. The R9M engine is a Renault product also found in the Megane, Kadjar, Scenic, and Trafic, so parts are available and relatively affordable on the BiH market. The problem is that buyers often purchase this model without knowing the difference between the 1.5 and 1.6 dCi, and the difference in maintenance costs is significant. A timing chain replacement on the R9M costs several times more than a belt on the K9K, and piezo injectors are pricier than the Delphi system.

In the workshop, we most commonly see cars with 150,000-200,000 km that were imported without complete service records. Buyers looking for a compact crossover in this segment usually choose between the Qashqai, the Hyundai Tucson TL, and the Kia Sportage QL. Both rivals have a more conventional engine design approach, making them somewhat more predictable to maintain. The Qashqai remains a good choice for someone who knows what they are buying and is prepared to maintain it on shortened intervals.

Common faults we see

From our experience, here is what most commonly comes in for repair on this model.

1. Timing chain stretch and wear

Symptom: Rattling from the front of the engine on cold start, rough running, check engine light with codes P0016 or P0017.

The R9M engine uses a timing chain instead of a belt. Over time, the chain stretches, and the crankshaft sprocket loses teeth. The problem most commonly appears after 120,000-180,000 km - earlier if oil changes were irregular. The camshaft has a specific design with pressed-on lobes rather than a forged single piece, which puts additional strain on the chain.

Advice: Pay attention to the engine sound on cold start. If you hear a metallic rattling that goes away once the engine warms up, do not delay. A chain failure can bend valves and destroy the cylinder head, which is a far more expensive job than a chain replacement alone.

2. Piezo injectors (Siemens/Continental)

Symptom: Rough engine running, jerking during acceleration, increased fuel consumption, exhaust smoke, code P0201-P0204.

The R9M uses Siemens piezoelectric injectors that are more sensitive to fuel quality than Bosch or Delphi systems. Diesel of varying quality arrives on the BiH market, and these injectors tolerate water or contaminants in the fuel poorly. Problems can appear as early as 80,000 km on vehicles that have not been serviced regularly.

Advice: Use a diesel fuel additive every 10,000-15,000 km. If the engine starts jerking, diagnostics will show which injector is out of spec. Sometimes a professional ultrasonic recalibration is enough instead of a full replacement.

3. DPF filter clogging

Symptom: Loss of power, DPF warning light on the dashboard, increased consumption, limp mode, code P2463.

The Qashqai J11 is an urban crossover and most owners in BiH drive it on short trips. The DPF filter cannot complete a regeneration cycle on short drives, so soot builds up. The problem gets worse in winter. The filter can clog as early as 50,000-80,000 km with exclusively city driving.

Advice: Once a week, take the car on the open road and hold 2,000-2,500 rpm for 20-30 minutes. This allows passive regeneration. If the DPF light is already flashing, do not turn the engine off - head to the workshop immediately.

4. Turbocharger failure

Symptom: Loss of power, black or blue exhaust smoke, abnormal whistling or whining, code P0299.

The R9M has a variable-geometry turbocharger that is sensitive to oil quality and soot deposits. The VGT mechanism vanes seize up from deposits, and the turbo bearings suffer if the oil is old or the wrong specification. Failure usually occurs after 100,000-150,000 km.

Advice: Do not shut the engine off immediately after fast driving. Let it idle for 30-60 seconds so the turbo can cool down. Use only the oil specification required by the engine (5W-30 ACEA C4).

5. EGR valve and intake deposits

Symptom: Rough idle, hesitation at low rpm, black smoke, code P0401 or P0402.

The EGR valve on the R9M engine gets clogged with soot deposits, especially with city driving. The intake pipes also suffer, gradually narrowing. The problem appears from around 60,000 km on city-driven vehicles.

Advice: Cleaning the EGR valve every 60,000-80,000 km is good prevention. If the engine is choking at idle and smoking, do not wait - a clogged EGR increases intake pressure and accelerates turbo wear.

6. Battery drain (parasitic draw)

Symptom: Car does not start after sitting overnight, frequently dead battery, needing jump leads.

The Qashqai J11 is known for a high battery replacement rate. The problem occurs because electronic modules do not enter sleep mode properly, and the IPDM (Intelligent Power Distribution Module) continues drawing current. Nissan released a software update for the BCM that partially fixes the issue, but many vehicles do not have it installed. You can read more about diagnosing this problem in our parasitic draw guide.

Advice: Check with an authorised dealer whether the BCM software update has been installed on your vehicle. If the battery is draining, we measure parasitic draw - anything above 50 mA at rest is a problem that needs to be resolved.

7. Front brake pads and discs

Symptom: Steering wheel vibration when braking, squealing, uneven disc wear, disc corrosion.

The front brake discs on the J11 are known for poor corrosion protection. Water, salt, and mud get in and stay inside the disc, causing uneven wear and vibrations as early as 30,000-40,000 km. The problem is more pronounced in BiH due to poorer road conditions and winter salt spreading.

Advice: When replacing discs, choose higher-quality aftermarket options with a better anti-corrosion coating. Cheaper alternatives will repeat the same problem within a year.

8. CVT gearbox (Xtronic variant)

Symptom: Jerking when pulling away, vibrations at low speeds, delayed shifting, gearbox fault message on display.

The automatic variant with the CVT (Xtronic) gearbox has issues with the chain and control software. This fault applies only to vehicles with the automatic gearbox, not all J11 models. Many vehicles in BiH have never had their gearbox oil changed because Nissan states the oil is lifetime fill - in practice this means problems after 80,000-120,000 km.

Advice: If you have a CVT, change the oil every 60,000 km regardless of the manufacturer's recommendation. NS-3 oil is mandatory - never use other specifications.

Which oil for the Nissan Qashqai 1.6 dCi

The specified grade for the R9M engine is 5W-30 ACEA C4. This oil has a low ash content (Low SAPS), which is crucial for a longer DPF filter and turbo lifespan. Nissan recommends a 30,000 km interval, but under BiH conditions (city driving, lower-quality diesel, temperature swings) we recommend changing it every 10,000-15,000 km. Synthetic oil of this specification is slightly more expensive than standard 5W-30 variants, but the savings on injectors and the DPF more than make up the difference.

Service and maintenance

The timing chain on the R9M engine has no prescribed replacement interval, but we recommend an inspection every 80,000-100,000 km and replacement at 120,000-150,000 km or earlier if a noise appears. The exact mileage threshold depends on the maintenance history and driving style. Oil: 5W-30 ACEA C4, change interval 10,000-15,000 km or once a year. We do not accept Nissan's long-life interval of 30,000 km because BiH conditions (city driving, lower-quality diesel, temperature extremes) do not tolerate it.

Replace the fuel filter every 20,000-30,000 km, depending on fuel quality at the stations you use. For the Euro 6 version with AdBlue, check the fluid level and quality at every service. CVT gearbox: change NS-3 oil every 50,000-60,000 km, regardless of the manufacturer's claim that it is lifetime fill.

Owner tips

  • Use 5W-30 ACEA C4 oil and change it at 15,000 km maximum. Nissan's long-life interval of 30,000 km is too high for our conditions.
  • Check the history before putting down a deposit: use the chassis number to pull the full history via carVertical. From international registries you get real odometer readings by date, recorded incidents, number of previous owners, and theft or total loss indicators. We consider this essential before buying any used car, especially imports from Italy and France where service histories are often incomplete. When paying for the report, you can use the code GAGA for a 20% discount.
  • Once a week, take the car on the open road and hold 2,000+ rpm for at least 20 minutes. The DPF needs this to regenerate.
  • Check with an authorised dealer whether the BCM software update for parasitic current draw has been installed on your vehicle.
  • Replace the fuel filter every 20,000-30,000 km. Local diesel is lower quality than German fuel, and the piezo injectors are sensitive to contaminants.
  • If you have a CVT gearbox, change NS-3 oil every 50,000-60,000 km regardless of the manufacturer saying it is lifetime fill.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Qashqai J11 1.6 dCi reliable at 200,000 km?

It can be reliable if maintained on shortened intervals. The key is that the timing chain has been checked and the injectors are in good condition. Vehicles with regular services at 15,000 km can pass 250,000 km without major issues.

Which engine is the better choice - 1.5 dCi or 1.6 dCi?

For most drivers in BiH, the 1.5 dCi (K9K) is the safer bet. It is cheaper to maintain, uses a belt instead of a chain, and has more robust injectors. The 1.6 dCi has more power but also brings more potential problems.

Is it worth fitting LPG to the Qashqai 1.6 dCi?

No, fitting LPG to a diesel engine is not possible. If you want LPG, you need the petrol version. The Qashqai J11 also came with a 1.2 DIG-T petrol engine that is suitable for LPG. Get in touch for an assessment.

How much does a timing chain replacement cost on the R9M engine?

The cost depends on the specific condition of the engine and additional parts needed. The replacement includes the chain, guides, tensioner, and a mandatory crankshaft sprocket. Contact us for a quote.

Is the CVT gearbox on the Qashqai problematic?

The CVT (Xtronic) can be reliable if the oil is changed every 50,000-60,000 km with NS-3 specification fluid. The problem arises when owners trust Nissan's claim that the oil is lifetime fill. A manual gearbox is generally the safer choice for a used car.

What to watch out for when buying a used Qashqai J11 1.6 dCi?

Make sure to check the timing chain sound on cold start, the DPF filter condition via diagnostics, injector performance, and turbo condition. Look for a vehicle with a complete service history and avoid examples that have been driven exclusively in the city.

If you notice any of these symptoms, stop by the workshop - it is better to check early than to pay for an expensive repair.
