Used Car 20,000-30,000 KM in BiH 2026 - Buyer's Guide

Passat B8, Audi Q5 and BMW 5 F10 dominate the 20,000-30,000 KM range in BiH 2026. Buyer's guide with market overview, top models and per-model checklist.

The 20,000 to 30,000 KM range is a turning point on the used-car market in BiH. Below this threshold, the older mainstream class dominates - Golf 5 and 6, Passat B6 and B7, earlier Octavia generations. One step up opens an entirely different level: Golf 7 in fresher model years, Passat B8, Audi Q5, VW Tiguan 4Motion and the first BMW 5 Series F10 come within reach for a buyer who has 20,000 to 30,000 KM and wants a real car for the family, for work, or for longer trips.

This analysis was prepared by the Auto Gas Gaga workshop in Banja Luka, based on a cross-section of hundreds of current listings on olx.ba and many years of experience with pre-purchase inspections.

Model Year Typical price (KM) Typical km Recommended engine What to watch
BMW 5 (F10/F11) 2010-2016 20,000-29,000 255,000-325,000 520d B47 (2015+) N47 chain pre-2012, expensive servicing
VW Golf 7 2013-2019 20,500-28,000 185,000-280,000 1.6 TDI 110hp DPF on 2.0 TDI, mandatory DSG service

What is currently on offer in this range

This is the class where premium brands become accessible - not necessarily in perfect condition, but accessible. On olx.ba in April 2026, this range offers a mix of younger mainstream models and older premium vehicles. The Golf 7 appears in fresher years than in the lower brackets, and the Passat B8 is the most represented model across the entire range. For a buyer looking for an SUV, the Audi Q5 and Tiguan 4Motion are realistic options. For a driver who wants a different feel from the German mainstream, the BMW 5 F10 and BMW 3 F30 are there too.

Automatic transmissions appear in nearly half of the listed vehicles. In the 15,000-20,000 KM bracket, automatics were on 18.4% of cars - here that jumps to 45-50%. DSG gearboxes (DQ250 and DQ200) are the standard on the VW Group, and the ZF automatic comes with BMW. Good news for motorway comfort, but it requires checking the gearbox service history.

Diesel is convincingly dominant with more than 90% of the offer. LPG, which made up 3-4% of the offer in lower brackets, falls below 0.5% here. A buyer spending 20,000 KM and more on a car plans higher annual mileage and chooses diesel for economy - but that also means greater exposure to issues related to the DPF filter.

The VW Group (VW + Audi + Škoda) holds nearly 70% of the total offer in this class - significantly more than in lower brackets. The reason is structural: Passat B8, Q5 and Golf 7 are expensive new cars whose first relevant model years for affordability fall right into this price range.

How we did the assessment

This guide draws on a cross-section of hundreds of current listings on olx.ba, pulled in April 2026 in the passenger-car category, range 20,000-30,000 KM. We analysed the distribution of brands and models, the fuel structure, the share of gearbox types and the age distribution of the offer. Reliability data come from published technical analyses and from our workshop's experience in Banja Luka with pre-purchase inspections of these models.

When someone asks us which car under thirty thousand, we first look at what is actually on offer in that range on the local market - because a buyer from BiH buys from BiH, not from German catalogues.

Top models and what dominates the offer

VW Passat B8 leads with around 12.5% of all listings in this class. Every eighth car on olx.ba in this range is a Passat B8 - sedan or Variant (estate). Tiguan I and Audi Q5 share a similar position with around 8-9% each. The Golf 7 sits at roughly 5-6%, and the BMW 5 F10 and F11 at around 7%.

The VW Group as a whole (VW + Audi + Škoda) covers nearly 70% of all listings. Compared to the previous 15-20k KM bracket, where the VW Group had 52.5%, here it grows to almost two thirds of the market. The reason is simple: Passat B8 and Q5 are vehicles whose first relevant years of affordability land exactly in this range.

Fuel structure: diesel 90.5%, petrol 9%, other 0.5%. This is the continuation of the trend we have been tracking through this entire guide series: the higher the bracket, the higher the diesel share. LPG was at 3% in the 4-6k KM bracket, 4% in the 6-10k KM bracket, below 1% in the 10-15k KM bracket, and here it practically vanishes.

Gearbox: automatics exceed 45% of the offer - a new record in the series. Up to this bracket, automatics were a minority. Passat B8 with DSG, Q5 with Tiptronic and BMW 5 with the ZF automatic strongly push this share upward.

Mercedes C-Class (W205) and E-Class (W212) are present with a smaller share - around 4-5% combined. An interesting alternative, especially the W212 estate, but service at an authorised dealer is more expensive than the VW equivalent.

Small city and compact

VW Golf 7 (2016-2019)

In this bracket, the Golf 7 is available in fresher years than in the 15-20k KM range - typically 2016 to 2019, with mileage below 200,000 km. For a buyer who wants a Golf 7 but isn't ready to pay for a brand-new car, this is the optimal buying zone.

What's good: the body is rust-free because the car is young, the Active Info Display infotainment on Highline and Lounge trims, a reliable 1.6 TDI engine on a manual gearbox, relatively low service costs compared to premium brands.

What to watch: a Golf 7 with the 2.0 TDI and DQ250 DSG can show signs of DPF problems if it has mostly been driven in the city on short trips. Check the gearbox service history - the DSG requires an oil change every 60,000 km without exception. If gearbox service history isn't documented, factor the service cost into your negotiation.

Škoda Octavia 3 (higher trim)

In this class, the Octavia 3 comes in Elegance and L&K trims - leather interior, panoramic roof, adaptive cruise control. Excellent value for money.

What's good: spacious interior even for a family with children, solid reliability scores, lower parts prices than Audi or BMW.

What to watch: the same DSG and DPF notes as for the Golf 7 - they share identical engine and gearbox combinations. Check the gearbox service history and any DPF regenerations on cars with mostly urban mileage.

Ford Focus III estate (2013-2018)

The Ford Focus estate rarely appears on olx.ba in this range, but offers solid value for a buyer who wants to step out of the VW zone.

What's good: direct and precise steering response that the Golf rarely offers, a solid 1.5 TDCi engine, a spacious boot on the estate version.

What to watch: the service network is sparser in BiH than the VW one. The EGR valve on the 1.5 TDCi engine can be a source of problems at higher mileage.

Family and workhorse

VW Passat B8 (2015-2019)

The Passat B8 is the absolute hit of this class - and for good reason. Modern design, spacious interior, Virtual Cockpit dashboard on higher trims, solid lane-keeping assistance. In this range it is mostly available in 1.6 TDI 120hp and 2.0 TDI 150hp variants, as a sedan and as a Variant (estate).

What's good: outstanding ride comfort, an economical 1.6 TDI on motorway runs, high reliability ratings for the body and electronics, excellent availability on the BiH market so negotiation is possible.

What to watch: the DPF filter is a common issue on Passats that have mostly been driven in the city or on short trips. We see this in the workshop regularly - a car with 250,000 km but predominantly urban mileage has a DPF that hasn't been able to regenerate properly. The 2.0 TDI version with the DQ250 DSG requires a clean gearbox service record. The water pump on the 2.0 TDI has a recommended replacement interval - ask when it was last done.

VW Tiguan I (2011-2016) 4Motion

The Tiguan I 4Motion is the cheapest SUV entry into this class. Popular in BiH because of winter driving and varied terrain, especially on roads to the mountains. On olx.ba, many Tiguans come from import (Austria, Germany), which means less corrosion than on local examples that have spent years on BiH winter roads.

What's good: 4Motion drive keeps the car stable on wet and snow, a high seating position makes getting in and out easy, compact dimensions are convenient for city parking.

What to watch: the timing chain is a critical issue on the Tiguan I with the 2.0 TDI. Volkswagen revised the timing chain tensioner in January 2013 - every Tiguan produced before that date has the same structural problem as the older Golf 6 TDI. Tiguans with the DQ200 (dry 7-speed DSG) without documented service history are a risk we don't recommend. If the gearbox shudders or hesitates on cold driving, that is not a normal condition.

Peugeot 3008 I (2013-2016)

Rarer on olx.ba in this range but worth considering for a buyer looking for a different approach. The 3008 is a compact crossover with somewhat lower service costs than direct German competition.

What's good: a unique interior that still looks modern, solid ride comfort, more accessible service than the Q5 or BMW.

What to watch: the 1.6 HDi engines can have EGR valve issues at higher mileage. The authorised service network is sparser in BiH than the VW network.

Older but still strong

Audi Q5 (8R, 2010-2015)

The 8R-generation Q5 is a premium SUV which in this class comes with significant mileage - typically 200,000 to 300,000 - but is mechanically solid if regularly serviced at Audi or a specialised workshop.

What's good: the Quattro drive is reliable for winter conditions and mountain roads, a spacious and premium interior with good equipment, a 2.0 TDI engine with 105 or 130 kW offers a good power-to-consumption ratio.

What to watch: the Q5 8R with the 2.0 TDI (engines CAHA/CAGB) has a known issue with the timing chain making noise on cold start - a metallic sound for the first 5-10 seconds when starting the engine cold is a serious warning sign. The Haldex differential requires regular oil changes - ask when it was last done. Beyond that, the Q5 is significantly more expensive to service than the VW or Škoda equivalent with the same engine.

BMW 5 (F10 sedan / F11 estate, 2010-2016)

The BMW 5 F10 is the most interesting car with driving character in this class for a serious buyer who isn't only after the lowest service price. The F11 estate version is especially popular on olx.ba - spacious, with elegant lines, excellent on longer motorway runs.

What's good: driving dynamics that the Passat or Q5 cannot offer, the ZF automatic gearbox on the 520d is surprisingly economical on the motorway, a premium interior with better equipment than the Passat in the same year.

What to watch: the BMW 5 F10 with the N47 engine (model years 2010-2012/2013) has a known timing chain problem that appears at higher mileage. The B47 engine (model years from 2015, models 518d/520d/525d) is significantly more reliable and the only one we openly recommend. BMW service is more expensive than VW - factor in 30-40% higher costs for the same types of service interventions.

VW Touareg 2 (7P, 2010-2015)

The Touareg 2 enters the lower part of this class, mostly with higher mileage. A solid alternative to the Q5 for a buyer who wants robustness and a more spacious interior.

What's good: robust and reliable on longer trips, the V6 TDI version offers a great deal of motorway comfort, more spacious interior than the Q5.

What to watch: service costs are similar to the Q5. Driveshafts and gearbox oil are items that require regular attention. Not a car for a buyer optimising total cost of ownership.

Cars with character

BMW 3 (F30 sedan / F31 estate, 2012-2018)

The BMW 3 F30 is available in this class in earlier model years, with mileage up to 250,000 km. A classic driver's car - well-proportioned, direct steering, exciting for everyday driving.

What's good: driving dynamics that neither the Passat nor the Golf can offer in this segment, a modern interior that hasn't visibly aged, the F31 estate option for families that need both space and dynamics.

What to watch: the N47 engine issue applies here too. A BMW 3 F30 from 2012-2013 with the N47 engine requires a timing chain check at a specialist workshop before purchase. Service is more expensive than VW, but in BiH there is a good network of specialised BMW workshops.

VW Golf 7 GTI (2013-2019)

Rare but available in this class, especially later model years with the 2.0 TSI engine producing 220 hp.

What's good: excellent driving dynamics, VW reliability with GTI character, more affordable service than BMW.

What to watch: check whether the car was used for track driving or has been modified. High risk of hidden damage to the exhaust, brakes and suspension on examples with such a history.

Audi A5 (8T Sportback / Coupé, 2012-2016)

The Audi A5 in this class comes with mileage appropriate to its age, but with a more distinctive look than the Golf or Passat.

What's good: a design that still looks modern, a solid 2.0 TDI engine, more attractive on the resale market than a Golf of the same year.

What to watch: check the gearbox and clutch condition - the A5 comes with the S tronic DSG which requires a clean service history. Without gearbox service documentation - negotiate or look for another example.

Range Rover Evoque I (2011-2015)

Surprisingly available in this class, especially in BiH where a good number have come in via import. Prestige looks at a lower price - but you need a reserve budget for service.

What's good: a unique design that stands out in traffic, a solid AWD system, good seat height.

What to watch: reliability is weaker than the German competition according to independent analyses. Service at a specialised Land Rover workshop is expensive and less commonly available in BiH than the VW network. For everyday reliability, the Q5 or BMW 5 F11 are sounder choices.

What to check before buying

Most buyers in this band do a thorough pre-purchase inspection, but the international vehicle history is the dimension a mechanic on a lift cannot see. The most straightforward way to get that second layer is through carVertical. Using the VIN, it pulls a documented vehicle history from international registries: mileage readings over time, recorded accidents, the number of previous owners, and theft or total-loss flags. We treat it as a routine step before buying a used car in this price range, especially for imported cars. When paying for the report you can use code GAGA and get 20% off.

Whichever model you choose in this class, follow this checklist:

Documentation:

  • VIN check at the Ministry of the Interior register
  • Service booklet or digital service record at the authorised network

Mechanical inspection:

  • An independent mechanic or authorised workshop - minimum one-hour inspection
  • OBD2 scan: DPF pressure, regen cycles, active and passive fault codes
  • Cold start - timing chain noise (a metallic sound in the first seconds is a warning sign)
  • Gearbox and clutch - no jerks, hesitation or unusual noises

Model-specific items:

  • Passat B8 / Golf 7 with DSG: gearbox service history is mandatory
  • Audi Q5 8R: cold start (timing chain), Haldex service history
  • BMW 5 with the N47 engine (pre-2013): mandatory timing chain check at a specialist workshop
  • Tiguan I 2.0 TDI: pre-2013 model years require a timing chain check

Fuel, gearbox and annual cost

Diesel dominates with more than 90% of the offer in this class. The economy of TDI engines on motorway runs makes diesel the logical choice for a buyer planning more than 15,000 km per year. Short city trips, however, are the killer of the DPF on all TDI engines - and one of the most common causes of faults we see in the workshop.

The diesel price on goriva.ba on 25 April 2026 stands at around 3.68 KM/L. Petrol is at around 2.92 KM/L. At the average consumption of a 2.0 TDI engine on the motorway (6-7 L/100km), diesel is the economical choice for a buyer with regular longer trips. For predominantly city driving, the gap to petrol shrinks while DPF problems grow.

Automatic gearbox: nearly half of the vehicles in this class come with an automatic. The DSG on the VW Group (DQ250 or DQ200) must be serviced every 60,000 km - no compromise. The ZF automatic on BMW has longer service intervals but higher intervention costs. The S tronic on Audi is identical to the DQ250 and the same notes apply. Without documented gearbox service history, that cost should enter the negotiation on the purchase price.

Indicative service costs vary by model:

  • Golf 7 and Passat B8: the lowest in this class, parts easily available
  • Škoda Octavia 3: similar to VW, sometimes slightly cheaper at independent workshops
  • Audi Q5 and BMW 5: 30-40% more expensive than the Golf for the same types of service interventions
  • Touareg 2 and Range Rover Evoque: the highest service costs in the class

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Passat B8 a better choice than the Audi Q5 for a buyer with no SUV need?

Yes. The Passat B8 has lower service costs, is more accessible at independent mechanics in BiH and offers similar motorway comfort. If you have no specific need for an SUV body or AWD drive, the Passat B8 is the better value for the same money in this class.

Is the BMW 5 F10 a smart choice for an everyday vehicle?

It can be, but only with the B47 engine that comes from 2015 onwards (518d, 520d, 525d). The older N47 has a documented timing chain problem that can be expensive to resolve. Beyond that, service is 30-40% more expensive than VW. The BMW 5 F11 estate combines space with driving character and is especially popular on olx.ba.

Is it safe to take a Tiguan I with the DQ200 gearbox without service history?

Not recommended. The DQ200 (dry 7-speed DSG) is more sensitive than the DQ250 (wet 6-speed) and requires precise adherence to oil service intervals. A Tiguan with the DQ200 without complete documentation carries the risk of an expensive gearbox service that can exceed any saving on the purchase price.

Up to how many kilometres is it safe to take a car in this class?

For a Passat B8 and Golf 7 with a clean service history - up to 260,000 km is acceptable. For an Audi Q5 8R and BMW 5 F10, we recommend staying below 230,000 km because service costs at higher mileage rise noticeably faster than on the VW models.

Is the Range Rover Evoque a good investment in this class?

For everyday reliability - not our recommendation. Reliability is weaker than the direct German competition, and service is expensive and harder to access in BiH. For the same money, the Audi Q5 or BMW 5 F11 offer significantly better reliability and service availability.

A young Golf 7 (2017-2019) or an older Audi Q5 (2011-2013) for the same money?

It depends on your priorities. The Golf 7 means lower mileage, lower service costs and a smaller risk of expensive repairs. The Audi Q5 offers an SUV body and Quattro drive, but also more potential service costs. If you have a family and need 4WD for winter or the mountains - Q5. If you're optimising reliability and total cost of ownership - Golf 7.
