You start thinking about an LPG conversion and suddenly you hear words like "atest", "homologation", "registration update", and you imagine half a day at government counters and a month of paperwork. The fear is understandable, but the reality is much calmer. The paperwork side of LPG in BiH is well defined, the procedure runs hundreds of times a year, and a serious workshop handles almost everything for you. You bring the vehicle and a few personal documents, and the rest moves through the workshop. Here is how it actually looks when the job is done by the book.
Why LPG homologation is required and what it really means
An LPG installation is not a small change to your car. The fuel feed is modified, a tank is added, along with lines, a reducer, injectors and a control unit. Under the road safety law in BiH, every such modification must be documented and confirmed by an authorised body. That is the heart of homologation, also called the LPG system certification (atest).
In practice it works like this. The workshop installing the LPG kit uses components that already carry their own factory certificates. Once the installation is finished, an authorised body checks that everything is mounted correctly, that the components are approved for your vehicle type, and that the system passes pressure and leak testing. If everything is in order, an LPG system certificate is issued. That document is your legal proof that the gas system in your car was installed properly.
Without that document, the vehicle technically carries an undeclared modification. This causes problems at the annual technical inspection, possible insurance issues in the event of an accident, and traffic police may ask questions during a roadside check. Nobody wants that kind of trouble over a piece of paper that can be sorted in a couple of days. That is why at a serious workshop the certification is not an extra service, it is part of the installation itself.
How the procedure looks step by step
Drivers often ask: "What do I have to do, how many places do I have to visit?" The answer is fewer than you think. The whole job moves through a few clear steps, and the workshop does most of them.
- LPG installation at an authorised workshop. You bring the car, we install the equipment, calibrate the ECU and run a road test. Every component is recorded by serial number because that information is needed later for the certificate.
- Preparation of the technical documentation. The workshop prepares the installation statement, certificates for the tank and reducer, confirmation that the install is sound, and any other paperwork the authorised body requires.
- LPG system certification (atest). The vehicle is presented to an authorised technical institution that inspects the installation, runs the leak test under pressure, and verifies everything is correct. If it passes, the certificate is issued.
- Update to the vehicle registration (saobraćajna dozvola). With the certificate and supporting documents, you go to the local registration office, where LPG is added to your registration as an alternative fuel.
- Annual technical inspection from that point on includes a check of the LPG system at every yearly inspection.

Who issues the LPG certificate in BiH
The LPG system certificate in BiH is issued by an authorised technical institution. These are accredited bodies licensed to test vehicles under the homologation rules. What you need to bring from your side
The documents you provide are short. These are things you already have at home or in the car, no special chasing or counter waiting required.
- Vehicle registration document (saobraćajna dozvola)
- ID card of the vehicle owner
- Proof of ownership if the vehicle was recently bought
- Any earlier certificates or documents related to the vehicle, if you have them
The technical side, meaning component certificates, the workshop installation statement, equipment data and all confirmations, we handle. Adding LPG to the vehicle registration
Once the certificate is issued, the next step is adding LPG to the registration document. This is the moment your gas system becomes an officially recorded alternative fuel on the vehicle. A note is added to the registration showing that the car also runs on LPG, and from that point it is visible to the police during a check and to inspectors at the technical inspection.
The update is done at the registration office for vehicles, with the full set of documents you received after the certification. In most cases it is a quick administrative step. After the registration is updated, always carry the document with you as you did before. It is the only formal proof that the LPG in your vehicle is legally installed and registered.
Technical inspection after the LPG conversion
From the moment LPG is recorded in the registration, your annual technical inspection includes the gas system. The inspector checks several safety related items:
- Tank mounting and brackets
- Ventilation around the tank
- Hoses and connections
- Filler and filler cap
- Control unit status and stored fault codes
- Pressure leak test
It sounds serious, but in practice a vehicle that was installed properly and is serviced on time passes the inspection without any issue. Most of the "my car failed because of LPG" stories we have heard over the years come down to neglected service, missed intervals, or installations done by someone who skipped the rules. If you keep up with regular service, your gas system runs quietly in the background and nobody worries about it.

What happens if you skip the certificate or take a shortcut
We have to be honest here, because your peace of mind depends on it. It is not unusual for someone to offer "an installation without the paperwork" because it is faster or cheaper. The consequences show up later and they are never pleasant.
- The vehicle will not pass the annual inspection until the situation is regularised. Without a valid inspection you cannot register the car.
- Your insurer can dispute coverage if there is an incident on a vehicle with an undeclared modification. Adjusters take this seriously.
- Traffic police at a checkpoint can ask for an explanation, write a ticket, and in the worst case stop the vehicle from continuing until the issue is resolved.
- Resale value drops. A serious buyer always checks the registration, sees that LPG is not listed, and either walks away or asks for a significant discount.
- Your own legal standing is weaker if anything ever happens with the vehicle. There is no document standing behind you.
Add it all up and there is no real reason to skip the certificate. There is only a reason to do it right away with a workshop that knows the process and includes the full paperwork in the service. We do not do half jobs.
Why LPG should never be installed without homologation
Serious workshops treat homologation as a default part of every installation. We have done it that way from day one.
