About this model
The Toyota Auris E180 is the second generation of Toyota's compact hatchback, produced from 2012 to 2018. In BiH it's a popular choice for buyers who want Japanese reliability in a compact package, and most examples on the market are imports from Germany, Austria and Slovenia with 150,000-250,000 km on the clock. The 1.4 D-4D diesel (1ND-TV, 90 HP) is the most sought-after diesel variant thanks to its frugal fuel consumption (4.7-5.5 l/100 km) and decent reliability for city and suburban driving. The E180 is a bit larger and more comfortable than the E150, with a more modern interior and better equipment, but the 1.4 D-4D is not a motorway cruiser. It's a city and regional car that needs a careful owner. You can learn more about Toyota and its servicing in Banja Luka on our page.
Engines and variants
This model is most commonly available in BiH with the following engines.
1ND-TV 1.4 D-4D 90 HP: The most common diesel in the E180, displacing 1364 cc with 205 Nm of torque. The engine uses a timing chain, a Bosch CP3S3 high-pressure pump and piezo injectors, and comes with a DPF from the factory. DPF clogging during city driving and post-injection diluting the oil with fuel are the two most specific problems with this engine in the E180. Parts are available through Toyota dealers and quality aftermarket suppliers (Bosch, Denso).
1NR-FE 1.33 VVT-i 99 HP: A petrol four-cylinder, simple and economical, with a timing chain and no turbo. It's the most common petrol choice in BiH. Oil consumption after 150,000 km and timing chain wear after 200,000 km are the main topics with this petrol engine. The simplest to maintain and cheapest for spare parts.
2ZR-FXE 1.8 Hybrid 136 HP: A hybrid drivetrain with an electric motor and CVT gearbox, the most economical variant for city driving but rarer in BiH. The hybrid system is extremely reliable, but replacing the hybrid battery after 10+ years can be a significant expense. In BiH it's mainly used for city driving where it saves the most fuel.
Reliability and reputation on the BiH market
The Toyota Auris E180 with the 1.4 D-4D is known in BiH as a reliable car that doesn't cause problems when properly maintained, but it's a small diesel engine that doesn't forgive neglect. Compared to the VW Golf 7 1.6 TDI or Opel Astra J 1.7 CDTI from the same segment, the Auris is simpler and cheaper for basic maintenance, but specific Toyota parts (injectors, turbo) can be somewhat pricier than VAG or GM aftermarket equivalents. Most examples on the BiH market have 180,000-250,000 km, meaning the DPF, EGR and injectors have already passed the critical stage or are close. Owners are typically people who want a quiet, no-surprises car - family drivers or retirees who drive moderately. Spare parts are available through Toyota dealers and quality aftermarket suppliers (Bosch, Denso, LuK), though not as widely as for the Golf or Astra.
Common faults we see
From our workshop experience, here's what most commonly comes in for repair on this model.
1. DPF filter and regeneration
Symptom: DPF warning light comes on, the car enters limp mode, noticeable power loss and increased fuel consumption.
The 1ND-TV in the E180 generation comes with a DPF from the factory. The engine uses post-injection for regeneration, which means some fuel ends up in the sump and raises the oil level. With predominantly city driving the regeneration can't complete and the filter clogs up. Excess fuel in the sump degrades lubrication and accelerates wear. We've written more about what a DPF filter is and why it clogs in a separate article.
Advice: Check the oil level every 5,000 km - if it's rising instead of dropping, post-injection is active and fuel is getting into the sump. Once a month, drive the car for 30-40 minutes on the motorway at 2,500-3,000 rpm so the regeneration can complete.
2. EGR valve and EGR cooler
Symptom: Power loss, black smoke from the exhaust, increased fuel consumption, check engine light. The engine may idle unevenly and jerk at low revs.
The E180 generation has an EGR with an electronic DC motor and a separate cooler. Frequent city driving and short trips cause soot to build up in the intake manifold and on the valve itself. The EGR cooler also collects deposits that reduce flow and cooling efficiency for the exhaust gases. We've written in more detail about the EGR valve and why it clogs.
Advice: Clean the EGR valve preventively every 50,000-70,000 km depending on driving conditions (shorter intervals in the city, longer on open roads). When cleaning, always inspect the cooler as well - if it's clogged, cleaning the valve alone won't solve the problem.
3. Turbo (VGT/VNT) problems
Symptom: Whistling above 1,600 rpm, power loss on the motorway, exhaust smoke, check engine light with boost pressure fault codes.
The Auris E180 1.4 D-4D uses a variable geometry turbo with an electric actuator. The VGT vanes seize up from soot and oil, especially during city driving. Oil leaking from the turbine can end up in the intake manifold and further contaminate the EGR and DPF.
Advice: If whistling or power loss appears, don't delay diagnostics. A seized VGT mechanism can strain the engine and overload the DPF. Check for oil leaks at the turbo during every service.
4. Injectors
Symptom: Uneven engine running, long cold starts, black smoke, jerking under acceleration, diagnostic fault codes related to injection correction.
From 2008 onwards the 1ND-TV uses piezoelectric injectors that are more precise but non-repairable - they have to be replaced as complete units. On earlier E180 examples (2012-2014) they may already be near end of life at 200,000+ km. Fuel quality in BiH further accelerates injector wear.
Advice: Use quality diesel fuel and add an injector cleaning additive every 10,000 km. Check injector corrections via diagnostics - deviations over 3 mg/stroke are a sign of impending failure.
5. Fuel rail pressure regulator
Symptom: Hard starting, engine stalling at idle, unstable running, fault code P0089 or P0191 on diagnostics.
The 1ND-TV uses a Bosch CP3S3 high-pressure pump with a regulator on the rail. The regulator is prone to both contamination and wear, which is unusual for Bosch systems but specific to this engine. Poor fuel quality further accelerates the problem.
Advice: When symptoms appear, check rail pressure via diagnostics - if it fluctuates or drops below 250 bar at idle, the regulator is likely the cause.
6. Glow plugs
Symptom: Difficult cold starting, glow plug warning light flashing on the dashboard, prolonged smoke on cold start.
The glow plugs on the 1ND-TV are known for seizing in the cylinder head after long use, because the aluminium head reacts with the steel of the glow plug. Replacing a single glow plug can take hours if it's seized. Usually 1-2 plugs fail, and the owner only notices the difference when temperatures drop below 5 degrees.
Advice: Don't wait until all four fail. Replace the full set preventively at 120,000-150,000 km while they haven't yet seized. Use anti-corrosion compound when fitting new ones.
7. Oil consumption and crankcase ventilation
Symptom: Oil level drops between services, blue oil smoke from the exhaust under acceleration, oily residue around the valve cover.
The crankcase ventilation system (PCV) on the 1ND-TV clogs up quickly, creating excess pressure in the crankcase and forcing oil past seals and ventilation channels. Toyota considers consumption up to 0.3 l/1,000 km as normal. The problem is worse on examples that mainly do city driving because DPF post-injection dilutes the oil with fuel. We've written more about the PCV valve and symptoms of failure in a separate guide.
Advice: Clean or replace the PCV valve every 40,000-60,000 km. Check the oil level every 5,000 km - if it's rising, fuel is entering the sump; if it's dropping faster than 0.5 l/1,000 km, crankcase ventilation is likely the cause.
8. Rear brakes - noise and corrosion
Symptom: Squealing and unpleasant smell from the rear brakes, vibrations under braking, uneven brake shoe wear.
The Auris E180 uses drum brakes at the rear on the 1.4 D-4D version. The wheel cylinders are prone to corrosion, and the shoes wear unevenly if the car sits for long periods. In BiH's climate, with damp winters and road salt, corrosion is accelerated.
Advice: Inspect the rear brakes at every service, not just the front ones. Replace the wheel cylinders if you notice fluid leaking or seizing.
Auris 1.4 D-4D turbo whistling
Turbo whistling on the E180 1.4 D-4D usually starts as a faint sound above 1,600 rpm and gradually gets louder. The most common cause is wear on the VGT vanes or leaks at the joints of the air hoses between the turbo and intercooler. Before replacing the turbo, check the clamps on the boost pipes and the intercooler for leaks. If the whistling is accompanied by a drop in boost pressure, the VGT mechanism is likely seized and needs cleaning or turbo replacement.
Which oil for Toyota Auris 1.4 D-4D
Toyota recommends 0W-30 or 5W-30 oil meeting the ACEA C2 specification for the 1ND-TV. Capacity is 4.8 litres. In BiH conditions, where short city trips are common, we recommend changing it every 10,000 km or once a year, whichever comes first. Toyota's extended 15,000 km interval is not appropriate for city driving and cars with a DPF because post-injection dilutes the oil with fuel, which accelerates engine wear.
Service and maintenance
The 1ND-TV uses a timing chain with no defined replacement interval, but the chain tensioner should be inspected after 200,000 km as wear can cause noise and chain skip. Oil: 0W-30 or 5W-30, capacity 4.8 litres, change interval in BiH conditions 10,000 km or once a year. Don't follow Toyota's extended 15,000 km interval because short city trips and post-injection dilute the oil with fuel. Replace the fuel filter every 30,000-50,000 km depending on fuel quality. DPF regeneration requires a motorway drive at least once a month for 30-40 minutes at 2,500+ rpm. Clean the EGR preventively at 50,000-70,000 km. For a complete assessment of your Auris's condition, the best approach is to book a major service at our workshop.
Owner tips
- Check the oil level every 5,000 km - if it's rising, fuel is entering the sump through post-injection and the oil needs changing earlier than planned.
- Check the history before putting down a deposit: use the chassis number to pull the car's full history through carVertical. From international registries you'll typically get actual odometer readings by date, recorded accidents, number of previous owners and indicators of theft or total loss. We consider this essential before buying any used car, especially Austrian and German imports. When paying for the report you can use the code GAGA for a 20% discount.
- Once a month, drive the car for 30-40 minutes on the motorway at 2,500-3,000 rpm so the DPF regeneration can complete fully.
- Use 0W-30 or 5W-30 oil and change it every 10,000 km - Toyota's 15,000 km interval is too long for BiH conditions and short city trips.
- Clean the EGR valve preventively at 50,000-70,000 km - don't wait for the check engine light because by then the EGR cooler is already clogged too.
- When buying used, check injector corrections via diagnostics - deviations greater than 3 mg/stroke mean replacement will be needed soon.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Toyota Auris E180 1.4 D-4D reliable at 250,000 km?
Yes, the 1ND-TV engine can last 300,000 km and beyond with regular maintenance. The key is changing oil every 10,000 km, cleaning the EGR at 50,000-70,000 km and not neglecting DPF regeneration. Most serious faults on this engine come from neglect, not poor design.
What are the most expensive faults on the Auris E180 1.4 D-4D?
Piezo injector and turbo replacement are the two costliest repairs. The injectors on the 1ND-TV are non-repairable - they must be replaced as complete units. The variable geometry turbo is also not cheap, but timely cleaning of the VGT mechanism can significantly extend its lifespan. The cost depends on the specific condition - get in touch for an estimate.
Is it worth fitting LPG to the Auris E180 1.4 D-4D?
No, LPG cannot be fitted to diesel engines. If you're interested in an LPG conversion, consider the petrol Auris E180 with the 1.33 VVT-i or 1.6 Valvematic engine - both are suitable for LPG and in combination with gas achieve excellent economy.
Does the Auris E180 1.4 D-4D have a timing chain or belt?
The 1ND-TV uses a timing chain with no defined replacement interval. However, that doesn't mean it lasts forever - the chain tensioner should be inspected after 200,000 km as wear can cause cold-start noise and in the worst case a chain skip.
Why is my oil level rising on the Auris 1.4 D-4D?
A rising oil level is a typical symptom of DPF post-injection. Some fuel ends up in the sump and dilutes the oil. If the car is driven mostly on short city trips, the regeneration doesn't complete and fuel accumulates in the oil. The solution is regular motorway driving and changing the oil at 10,000 km instead of 15,000 km.
Which engine is the best choice in the Auris E180 for BiH?
For city and suburban driving, the 1.8 hybrid is the most durable choice if you find an example with a healthy hybrid battery. If you want a diesel, the 1.4 D-4D is a solid engine with discipline around oil and DPF maintenance. For those who mainly drive in the city and want the lowest running costs, the 1.33 VVT-i petrol is the simplest and cheapest to maintain.
If you notice any of these symptoms, drop by the workshop - it's better to check early than to pay for an expensive repair.
