Common Faults of Renault Kadjar 1.5 dCi

From our workshop: common faults on the Renault Kadjar 1.5 dCi (K9K 646/649), maintenance tips and what to check when buying used.

About this model

The Renault Kadjar is a compact crossover that appeared on the BiH market in 2015 as Renault's answer to the Nissan Qashqai, sharing the CMF-C/D platform. In BiH it is popular as a more affordable imported SUV, mostly brought in from France and Belgium. The most common version on our roads is the 1.5 dCi with 110 HP and a manual gearbox, though EDC automatic variants turn up as well. Most examples in BiH have between 100,000 and 200,000 km, imported from Western Europe and serviced at factory intervals that are too long for local driving conditions. The Kadjar suits an owner who wants a roomier SUV shape with economical diesel consumption but who is willing to maintain it more carefully than Renault's service schedule suggests.

Engines and variants

This model is most commonly available in BiH with the following engines.

1.5 dCi 110 HP (K9K 646/K9K 649): The most popular Kadjar version in BiH with 110 HP and 260 Nm, available with a manual or EDC gearbox. Sensitive to oil quality and service interval length, with crankshaft bearings and injectors being the main concerns at higher mileages. Most owners choose the manual gearbox, which is considerably more reliable than the EDC variant. Parts are identical to those for the Megane and Qashqai, so availability is excellent.

1.6 dCi 130 HP (R9M 414): The stronger diesel variant with 130 HP and 320 Nm, supplied exclusively with an EDC gearbox or with all-wheel drive. The R9M engine is more robust than the K9K, but the EDC gearbox is mandatory, so dual-clutch automatic problems are more frequent on this version. This is the more powerful option for drivers who need towing capacity or 4x4 for winter conditions.

1.2 TCe 130 HP (H5Ft): A turbo petrol with 130 HP, popular with buyers who want to avoid diesel and DPF issues. Completely different fault profile: the wet timing belt is a well-known weak point of this engine, along with oil consumption and ignition coils as the main concerns. The wet belt requires replacement at a much shorter interval and is a more expensive job than the dry belt on the diesel version.

1.3 TCe 140/160 HP (H5Ht): A newer turbo petrol developed with Mercedes, replacing the 1.2 TCe from the 2019 facelift. The timing chain and oil consumption are known weak points, but these are rarer in BiH since they are newer examples with lower mileage.

Reliability and reputation on the BiH market

The Renault Kadjar has earned a reputation on the BiH market as a solid crossover for reasonable money. Parts are easy to find because it shares its mechanicals with the Nissan Qashqai J11 and Renault Megane - from filters to injectors, a lot is interchangeable. A typical BiH owner is a driver who wanted a roomier car with low fuel consumption and found the Kadjar as a cheaper alternative to the Qashqai or Tucson. Compared to competitors, the Kadjar loses on interior quality and electronics but makes up for it with K9K fuel economy and parts availability. At 200,000 km with regular maintenance, most examples run without major problems. Neglected cars with infrequent services and exclusively city driving quickly show weak points in the form of the DPF, EGR and bearings. In our workshop we most often see Kadjar examples that were serviced in France at the factory 30,000 km interval, which is too long for local fuel quality and driving conditions.

Common faults we see

From our experience, here is what most commonly comes in for repair on this model.

1. EGR valve

Symptom: Jerking under acceleration, check engine light, power loss, black exhaust smoke, increased fuel consumption.

The K9K engine in the Kadjar uses an EGR valve that clogs with soot deposits from exhaust gases mixed with oil vapour. The problem is especially pronounced with city driving and short trips because the engine does not get hot enough to burn off the deposits. It typically appears between 80,000 and 140,000 km. You can read more about how the EGR works and why it causes problems in our EGR valve guide.

Advice: We clean the EGR ultrasonically or chemically if the deposits are not too hard. If the pneumatic mechanism is seized, replacement is the only solution.

2. DPF filter (clogging and regeneration)

Symptom: DPF warning light on the dashboard, car enters limp mode, increased consumption, black or white smoke, power loss.

The Kadjar with 1.5 dCi has a Euro 6 DPF that requires regular regeneration cycles. Owners who drive only short city trips do not allow the filter to regenerate. The problem appears as early as 60,000 to 90,000 km with exclusively city driving. For a more detailed explanation of how it works and how to prevent issues, see our article on what a DPF filter is and why it clogs.

Advice: Before replacing the filter, we always attempt a forced regeneration in the workshop. If the filter is physically damaged or excessively saturated, replacement is unavoidable. Regular motorway driving is the best prevention.

3. Turbocharger and actuator

Symptom: Whistling from the engine, power loss under acceleration, check engine light, black or blue smoke, car not responding to throttle.

The K9K turbocharger in the Kadjar is sensitive to oil quality and timely oil changes. The turbo actuator seizes from deposits and insufficient activity, particularly with gentle city driving styles. The problem typically appears after 120,000 km or earlier on neglected examples.

Advice: We first check the actuator via diagnostics and mechanically. Often only the actuator is at fault, not the entire turbo. Complete turbo replacement is an expensive job that can be avoided with regular servicing.

4. Injectors (Delphi common rail)

Symptom: Metallic knocking when cold, black smoke under acceleration, rough idle, difficult starting, diesel smell in the cabin.

The K9K engine uses Delphi common rail injectors known as a weak point of this unit. The copper washers under the injectors lose their seal over time and exhaust gases leak through. Fuel quality in BiH further accelerates injector tip wear. The problem appears between 120,000 and 180,000 km.

Advice: We test fuel return per cylinder. If only the washer is the issue, replacing the copper ring is a straightforward job. Full injector replacement is only needed when the tip is physically damaged.

5. EDC gearbox (dual-clutch automatic)

Symptom: Jerking when pulling away, clumsy gear changes, delayed response, gearbox overheating in traffic.

The Kadjar with the EDC (Getrag dual-clutch) gearbox is known for jerking when setting off. The clutch packs wear prematurely, especially in city traffic with frequent stops. The mechatronic unit develops internal oil leaks that affect shift quality. The problem appears as early as 50,000 to 80,000 km.

Advice: We first reset the adaptations and update the gearbox software. If the jerking persists, we inspect the clutch packs and mechatronic unit. The manual gearbox version does not have these problems.

6. Electronic parking brake (EPB)

Symptom: Parking brake warning light on the dashboard, error when releasing, rear brake lockup, squealing while driving.

The Kadjar uses an electronic parking brake with motors on the rear calipers. The rear calipers seize due to corrosion and insufficient use, especially if the car sits for extended periods. When replacing pads, diagnostics are needed to open the EPB system, which many workshops skip, triggering an error. Read more about EPB systems and maintenance in our electronic parking brake guide.

Advice: Before replacing rear pads, we always use diagnostics to open the EPB system. We clean and lubricate the caliper guide pins preventively with every pad change.

7. Parasitic current draw and battery

Symptom: Car won't start in the morning, battery drains overnight, lights flicker for no reason, infotainment system resets.

The Kadjar is known for parasitic current draw that drains the battery while the car is parked. Causes vary from a faulty communication module to the R-Link multimedia system not shutting down completely. The problem is especially noticeable on examples with the start-stop system and an AGM battery.

Advice: We measure resting current with an ammeter and look for the module that is not sleeping. Often it is the multimedia system or the telematics module. Regular driving and battery maintenance extend battery life.

8. Crankshaft bearings (big-end bearings)

Symptom: Deep metallic knocking from the bottom of the engine, oil pressure drop, oil warning light on, vibrations.

The most dreaded K9K fault is premature wear of the lower crankshaft bearings. The problem particularly affected Euro 4 and early Euro 5 versions, but it also occurs on the Euro 6 K9K 646/649 if oil is not changed regularly. The cause is insufficient lubrication with extended service intervals and deposit build-up.

Advice: This fault requires engine disassembly. Prevention is the only real answer: we change the oil at 10,000-15,000 km or once a year, no exceptions. Use oil meeting the RN 0720 specification.

Kadjar 1.5 dCi DPF regeneration issues

The Kadjar's DPF system requires active regeneration that starts automatically when enough soot has accumulated. Regeneration lasts 10-20 minutes and requires a constant speed above 60 km/h with a warmed-up engine. Owners who drive only short city trips (commuting to work and back) never let the filter complete a cycle, so soot accumulates to a critical level. When that happens, the car enters protection mode and the DPF light comes on. We recommend at least one motorway drive per week of minimum 20 minutes without stopping, especially in winter months when the engine stays cold longer.

Renault Kadjar EDC gearbox judder

The EDC (Efficient Dual Clutch) gearbox in the Kadjar is a Getrag unit with dry clutch packs. Juddering when pulling away is the most common owner complaint, especially in city traffic with frequent stop-and-go. The principle is similar: it is dual-clutch technology. However, the execution, software, oil and typical faults differ from manufacturer to manufacturer. The Getrag EDC in a Renault has different weak points than VAG's DSG or Ford's PowerShift. If you are buying a Kadjar for mainly city use, the manual gearbox is a significantly more reliable choice.

Service and maintenance

The timing belt on the K9K 646/649 engine is replaced at 150,000 km or every 6 years, whichever comes first. We recommend oil changes at 10,000-15,000 km or once a year with oil meeting the RN 0720 specification (5W-30), depending on driving conditions (shorter interval in the city, longer on the open road). The factory interval of 30,000 km is overly optimistic for BiH conditions and fuel quality. The fuel filter is replaced every 25,000-35,000 km and the air filter every 15,000-20,000 km, depending on conditions. On EDC variants the gearbox oil is changed at 50,000-70,000 km. The DPF requires regular regeneration - we recommend at least one motorway drive per week of minimum 20 minutes.

Which oil for the Kadjar 1.5 dCi K9K

For the K9K 646 and K9K 649 engine in the Kadjar, the Renault RN 0720 specification is mandatory, corresponding to 5W-30 viscosity with low SAPS properties. This is critical for DPF protection because standard oils with high sulphated ash content clog the filter more quickly. Do not use oils of other specifications even if the seller claims they are "compatible". We change the oil at 10,000-15,000 km depending on whether you drive mainly in the city or on the open road.

Owner tips

  • Change the oil at 10,000-15,000 km or once a year with the RN 0720 specification (5W-30), depending on driving conditions (shorter interval for city, longer for mixed driving). The factory recommended interval of 30,000 km is overly optimistic.
  • Check the history before putting down a deposit: using the chassis number, pull the full vehicle history via carVertical. From international registries you get real odometer readings by date, recorded accidents, number of previous owners and indicators of theft or total loss. We consider this mandatory before buying any used Kadjar, especially with French and Belgian imports where the mileage has often been wound back. When paying for the report you can use the code GAGA for a 20% discount.
  • At least once a week drive on the motorway for 20+ minutes to allow DPF regeneration, especially if you mostly drive in the city.
  • Check the battery resting current when buying - a normal value is below 50 mA after all modules have gone to sleep.
  • When replacing rear brake pads, always choose a workshop with diagnostics for the EPB system, otherwise you will get a warning on the dashboard.
  • If buying a used Kadjar, avoid the EDC gearbox if you mostly drive in city traffic - the manual is significantly more reliable.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Renault Kadjar 1.5 dCi reliable up to 200,000 km?

With regular maintenance and oil changes at 10,000-15,000 km, the K9K engine in the Kadjar is capable of reaching 200,000 km without major problems. The key is not to skip oil changes and to use the correct specification. Neglected examples have problems with crankshaft bearings and injectors as early as 150,000 km.

Is it worth buying a Kadjar with the EDC gearbox?

The EDC dual-clutch gearbox in the Kadjar is known for juddering when pulling away and premature clutch pack wear. If possible, choose the manual gearbox version which does not have these problems. If you are buying an EDC, be sure to check the service history and test drive in city traffic.

Which engine is the best choice in the Kadjar?

For most BiH drivers, the 1.5 dCi 110 HP with a manual gearbox is the safest choice. The engine is proven, parts are cheap and available, and consumption is between 5 and 6 litres per 100 km. Avoid EDC versions if you spend most of your time driving in the city.

Is it worth fitting LPG on a Kadjar 1.2 TCe?

The Kadjar with the 1.2 TCe turbo petrol is suitable for an LPG conversion, but only with a quality sequential installation and regular filter changes. The fuel savings are significant, especially for drivers covering more than 15,000 km per year. The diesel version does not have this option.

Why does the Kadjar stall or not start in the morning?

The most common cause is parasitic current draw that drains the battery while the car is parked. The Kadjar has a known issue with modules that do not shut down fully. Come in for diagnostics so we can measure the resting current and identify which module is drawing power. Often it is the R-Link multimedia system.

Kadjar or Qashqai - which is the better choice?

The Kadjar and Qashqai J11 share a platform, engine and most of the mechanicals. The differences are in design, interior quality and used-market pricing. The Qashqai usually holds a higher price but also has better build quality. Mechanically they are practically identical, so from a servicing budget perspective it makes no difference which you choose.

Does the Kadjar have corrosion problems?

The Kadjar generally has better anti-corrosion protection than older Renault models, but the rear wheel arches and sills need inspection, especially on examples from northern European countries with salted roads. Check the lower door edges and underbody joints before buying.

If you notice any of these symptoms, stop by the workshop - it is better to check early than to pay for an expensive repair.
