Common Faults of Peugeot 5008 1.6 HDi

From our workshop experience - overview of common faults on the Peugeot 5008 1.6 HDi, from DPF filter and turbo issues to electronic parking brake and tailgate.

About this model

The first-generation Peugeot 5008 appeared in 2009 as a compact seven-seater aimed at families that need more space than a regular estate but don't want a full-size van. It arrived on the BiH market en masse as a used import from France, Belgium and Italy, and quickly became a popular choice for larger families looking for an affordable vehicle with three rows of seats. It's based on the same platform as the 308 and 3008, sharing the 1.6 HDi engine with those models, but its greater weight and specific equipment (electric tailgate, electronic parking brake, sliding rear seats) introduce additional failure points that the smaller models don't have. Most examples on our roads have between 150,000 and 280,000 km and date from 2010 to 2015. If you're looking for a Peugeot service in Banja Luka, we have plenty of experience with this model.

Engines and variants

This model is most commonly available in BiH with the following engines.

DV6TED4 (9HZ) - 1.6 HDi 110 HP: The older variant with a conventional dry timing belt, 110 HP, mechanical turbo with wastegate regulation. Produced from 2009 to 2012. Classic problems with turbo oil channels and the DPF, but no wet belt risk since the timing belt is replaced in the standard way at around 140,000-160,000 km or 10 years. For BiH conditions we recommend a shorter interval. Parts are available and relatively affordable, and it's proven to be the more economical choice for maintenance.

DV6C (9HR) - 1.6 e-HDi 112 HP: The newer variant with a wet timing belt running in an oil bath, start-stop system and variable-geometry turbo. Produced from 2010 to 2014. The critical point is the wet timing belt, which can delaminate and destroy the engine, making replacement more expensive and complex than a classic dry belt. Owners buying this engine must be aware of this risk and follow replacement intervals more strictly than the factory recommendation.

DV6FC (9HD/9HJ) - 1.6 BlueHDi 100/120 HP: The newest variant with an SCR catalytic converter and AdBlue system, Euro 6, available in 100 and 120 HP versions. Produced from 2014 to 2017. On top of the wet belt, the AdBlue system adds complexity - the pump, injectors and level sensor are additional failure points, especially on vehicles driven on short trips. This is the most expensive engine to maintain in the 5008 range.

DW10CTED4 (RH02) - 2.0 HDi 150/163 HP: The larger diesel with a timing chain, sturdier suspension and better suited to the 5008's weight, but rarer in BiH due to higher fuel consumption. Produced from 2009 to 2015. No wet belt problem since it uses a chain, but the timing chain can stretch after 200,000+ km, and the bigger engine means pricier injectors and turbo. If you find a well-maintained example, you get the most capable powertrain for this car.

Reliability and reputation on the BiH market

The first-generation Peugeot 5008 is a car that can be either extremely rewarding or extremely problematic on BiH roads, depending on how well the previous owner kept up with servicing. Examples with a regular service history and timely belt and turbo replacements run 250,000+ km without major issues. On the other hand, imports from France with short city trips and minimal servicing often arrive with a clogged DPF, a worn turbo and a broken electronic parking brake. Parts are available and relatively affordable since they're shared with the 308 and 3008, which are widely represented, so sourcing isn't a problem even in BiH. In its segment of affordable seven-seaters, it competes with the Opel Zafira B, Citroen Grand C4 Picasso and Renault Grand Scenic. Of all of them, the 5008 has the most modern equipment but is also the most sensitive to neglect. In our workshop we most often see examples with 180,000-250,000 km coming in for their first serious service with us, usually with two or three faults at the same time.

Common faults we see

From our practice, here's what most commonly comes in for repair on this model.

1. DPF filter and regeneration

Symptom: DPF warning on the dashboard, loss of power, smoke from the exhaust, car enters engine protection mode.

The Peugeot 5008 is a family car that most owners in BiH use for short city drives: school, work, shops. The DV6 engine on short trips doesn't reach the temperature needed for automatic DPF regeneration, so the filter clogs quickly. The problem is more pronounced than on smaller Peugeots because the heavier body demands more power at low RPMs. You can read more about why this happens in our guide on DPF filters.

Advice: If you drive mostly in the city, once a week take a 30+ minute drive on the motorway at 2500+ RPM. Forced regeneration at a workshop is a temporary fix. If the DPF clogs every 2-3 months, the EGR valve and injectors should also be checked.

2. Turbocharger and turbo oil filter

Symptom: Whistling that changes pitch, loss of power at higher RPM, blue-grey smoke, oil leaking around the turbo.

DV6 engines have a well-known weakness: the oil channel that lubricates the turbo has a small filter that clogs if oil isn't changed regularly. When the filter clogs, the turbo runs without adequate lubrication and wears out rapidly. On the 5008 the problem is somewhat more frequent because the heavier vehicle puts more strain on the turbo, especially when driving with a full car and luggage.

Advice: Change oil at 10,000 km, not the 20,000 stated in the service book. Use only oil meeting the PSA B71 2290 specification. When replacing the turbo, always clean or replace the oil return line - otherwise the new turbo fails within 20,000 km.

3. Electronic parking brake

Symptom: Parking brake doesn't engage or release, error on the dashboard, car rolls on slopes, brakes remain locked.

The Peugeot 5008 uses an electronic parking brake with electric motors on the rear brakes. The motors and control unit are sensitive to moisture and corrosion, especially in BiH conditions with road salt in winter. The problem typically appears after 100,000-150,000 km, and repair requires diagnostics since the fault can be the motor, wiring or control unit.

Advice: If the electronic parking brake starts working intermittently, come in for diagnostics before it fails completely. Waiting leads to a costlier repair because one seized motor can overload the other.

4. Electric tailgate

Symptom: Tailgate doesn't open via button or remote, opens halfway then stops, you hear a click but nothing happens.

The electric tailgate mechanism is one of the most common faults on the 5008. The electric motors, microswitches and cables wear out relatively quickly, and some owners report problems as early as 40,000-50,000 km. Moisture and dirt accelerate wear, and the mechanism itself is more expensive than a regular lock.

Advice: Regularly lubricate the cables and tailgate mechanism with silicone spray. If the electric mechanism fails completely, there's a manual release from inside - familiarise yourself with it before it catches you by surprise in a car park with a fully loaded car.

5. Dual-mass flywheel

Symptom: Vibrations at idle, knocking when starting and stopping the engine, jerking when pulling away in first gear, noise from the gearbox area.

The dual-mass flywheel on the DV6 engine wears faster than on larger diesels because the engine produces relatively high torque for its displacement. On the 5008, which is heavier than the 308, the flywheel is under additional strain, especially in city driving with frequent stop-and-go. Typical lifespan is 150,000-200,000 km depending on driving style.

Advice: Always combine dual-mass flywheel replacement with a clutch kit - the parts are affordable and the labour is the same. Don't drive at excessively low RPM in higher gears, as that's the fastest way to destroy the flywheel.

6. Wet timing belt (DV6C engine only)

Symptom: No symptoms in the early stage. Later, rough engine running, check engine light on, and in the worst case complete engine failure.

The DV6C engine variant (code 9HR, from 2010 onwards) uses a timing belt that runs in an oil bath - the so-called wet belt. This belt can begin to delaminate and rubber fragments can block oil channels, leading to catastrophic engine failure. PSA recommends replacement at 180,000 km or 10 years, but in practice problems appear earlier, especially if oil isn't changed regularly. The older DV6TED4 engine doesn't have this issue as it uses a classic dry belt.

Advice: On DV6C engines, replace the wet timing belt no later than 150,000 km or 8 years. Use only the original belt and roller kit. This is not a job to save money on parts - a non-original belt in an oil bath is a risk not worth taking.

7. EGR valve

Symptom: Unstable idle, loss of power, black smoke, check engine light on, increased fuel consumption.

The EGR valve on the DV6 engine gets fouled with carbon deposits, especially during city driving on short trips. A fouled EGR valve alters the mixture composition, affecting engine performance and potentially accelerating DPF clogging. On the 5008 the problem is more frequent because city use dominates - it's a family car, not a motorway cruiser.

Advice: EGR valve cleaning is a relatively simple and inexpensive job that we recommend every 80,000-100,000 km. If the valve is cleaned regularly, full replacement is rarely needed.

8. Front shock absorbers and spring bearings

Symptom: Knocking and creaking over bumps, especially at low temperatures, instability in corners, uneven tyre wear.

The Peugeot 5008 is longer and heavier than the 308 platform it's based on, and the suspension is dimensioned at the limit. Front shock absorbers and spring bearings wear out faster than on smaller models. Typical shock absorber lifespan is 80,000-120,000 km depending on road quality, and BiH roads speed up that process.

Advice: Replace shock absorbers in pairs, left and right together. When replacing shocks, always check and replace the spring bearings too - the part costs little and the labour is the same. After replacement, make sure to get a wheel alignment.

Which oil for the Peugeot 5008 1.6 HDi

The DV6 engine requires oil meeting the PSA B71 2290 specification (most commonly Total Quartz Ineo ECS 5W-30 or an equivalent from other manufacturers). This is a low-ash oil that's important for DPF filter protection. Using oil that doesn't meet this specification accelerates DPF clogging because it produces more ash during combustion. Keep the oil change interval at 10,000-15,000 km, depending on driving conditions (shorter in the city, longer on open roads). We don't recommend the factory long-life interval of 20,000 km for BiH conditions.

Service and maintenance

The timing belt on the DV6TED4 (dry) engine is replaced at 140,000-160,000 km or 10 years, depending on the year and actual condition. On DV6C engines with the wet belt, intervals are shorter - 120,000-150,000 km or 8 years maximum. Change oil at 10,000-15,000 km with PSA B71 2290 specification (Total Quartz Ineo ECS 5W-30 or equivalent). Replace the fuel filter every 25,000-30,000 km, since a dirty fuel filter accelerates injector wear. The DPF filter requires occasional forced regeneration if you drive exclusively in the city. Come to the workshop before the warning light comes on - by the time it does, you already have a problem.

Owner tips

  • Check the history before putting down a deposit: use the chassis number to pull the car's full history via carVertical. From international registries you'll get real odometer readings by date, recorded accidents, number of previous owners and indicators of theft or total loss. We consider this essential before buying any used car, especially French imports where the history is often incomplete. When paying for the report you can use the code GAGA for a 20% discount.
  • Once a week, drive on the motorway for 20-30 minutes at 2500+ RPM to allow automatic DPF regeneration. This is the cheapest prevention of the most expensive fault.
  • On DV6C engines (2010+), insist on wet timing belt replacement no later than 150,000 km or 8 years. Don't wait for PSA's 180,000 km recommendation.
  • Use oil meeting PSA B71 2290 specification and change it at 10,000-15,000 km. The DV6 engine doesn't tolerate long-life intervals of 20,000 km.
  • Regularly lubricate the electric tailgate mechanism with silicone spray. Five minutes of work prevents a more serious fault.
  • Check the electronic parking brake function at least once a month, especially in winter. Corrosion on the electric motors progresses silently until it fails completely.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Peugeot 5008 1.6 HDi reliable up to 200,000 km?

With regular maintenance, yes. The critical points are the turbo, timing belt and DPF filter. If those components have been maintained per recommendations, the engine can comfortably exceed 250,000 km. Check the service history before buying - without it, the 5008 is a risky purchase.

Which engine is the best choice in the Peugeot 5008?

For BiH conditions, the DV6TED4 (110 HP, up to 2012) with the dry belt is the simplest to maintain. The DV6C (112 HP) with the wet belt is more modern but requires closer attention to belt replacement intervals. The 2.0 HDi is more powerful and handles the car's weight better, but it's rarer and more expensive to maintain.

Is it worth fitting LPG to the Peugeot 5008?

The 5008 comes exclusively with diesel engines in BiH, and fitting LPG to a diesel engine isn't a standard procedure. If you're looking for an LPG-compatible vehicle, the 5008 isn't the right choice. Get in touch and we'll point you towards a model that supports LPG conversion.

What does the wet timing belt mean on the 5008?

The DV6C engine (from 2010 onwards) uses a timing belt that runs submerged in engine oil rather than in a dry compartment. The advantage is quieter operation and a longer nominal lifespan, but if the belt starts delaminating, rubber fragments can block oil channels and completely destroy the engine. Replacement is more expensive and complex than a classic belt.

How much fuel does the Peugeot 5008 1.6 HDi use in the city?

Realistic city consumption is 6.5-7.5 litres per 100 km, depending on driving style and load. On open roads it drops to 5-5.5 litres. If consumption suddenly rises above 8 litres, check the EGR valve, injectors and tyre pressures.

Is the Peugeot 5008 a good family car for BiH?

If you need a third row of seats, the 5008 is one of the most affordable choices. It's spacious, comfortable on longer trips and well-equipped. But it requires more regular servicing than average - this isn't a car that tolerates neglect. For families that drive short city trips and rarely service their car, something simpler would be a better choice.

How do you tell if the DPF filter is clogged on the 5008?

The first sign is the DPF warning light on the dashboard, but you may also notice a slight loss of power, increased consumption and an unpleasant smell from the exhaust. If you notice any of these symptoms, don't ignore them - come in for diagnostics. A clogged DPF that's forced can damage the turbo and catalytic converter.

If you notice any of these symptoms, drop by the workshop - it's better to check early than to pay for an expensive repair.
