About this model
The Opel Astra K is the fifth generation of Opel's best-selling model line, produced from 2015 to 2021. In BiH it has become a common sight as an affordable alternative to the Golf 7 and Focus Mk3, especially in the estate version (Sports Tourer) which is practical for family use. Most examples on the local market come with the 1.6 CDTI diesel engine (codes B16DTE or B16DTH) in 110 or 136 HP variants. Compared to the previous J generation, the Astra K is noticeably lighter (up to 200 kg less), more spacious inside and more economical, but it also brought new specific problems. Above all, the timing chain has caused plenty of headaches for owners across Europe, and we see the same on our local examples.
Engines and variants
This model is most commonly available in BiH with the following engines.
B16DTE (110 HP) - The lower-powered 1.6 CDTI variant with 110 HP and 300 Nm, the most common choice on the used car market in BiH. It is economical and powerful enough for everyday use. The start-stop system tends to act up more frequently due to frequent activation in city driving, and the DPF filter clogs faster on short trips. Buyers looking for an affordable city car with low fuel consumption typically go for this one, and parts are readily available.
B16DTH (136 HP) - The more powerful variant with 136 HP and 320 Nm, more common on better-equipped examples and estates. It offers livelier driving with similar fuel consumption to the weaker version. The turbocharger operates under greater load so the bearings are somewhat more prone to wear, while the timing chain problem is equally present as on the B16DTE. Drivers who frequently use motorways or need extra power for a fully loaded car tend to choose this one.
B16DTL (95 HP) - The weakest variant with 95 HP, rare on our market. These are mostly imported examples from Germany with higher mileage. The same timing chain issue applies as with the other variants, and because of the lower power output the engine runs at higher revs more often, which accelerates DPF system wear. Parts are shared with the other 1.6 CDTI variants, so availability is not a problem.
Reliability and reputation on the BiH market
The Astra K ages reasonably well on Bosnian roads, but not without issues. The main cause for concern is the timing chain - a fault that can be expensive if neglected, but one that can be kept under control with prevention. Parts are readily available since Opel is well represented in BiH, and most mechanics are familiar with the platform. Compared to the competition, the Golf 7 1.6 TDI has a timing belt that is cheaper to replace but requires strict adherence to service intervals, while the Focus Mk3 1.6 TDCi has its own timing chain problems. The typical Astra K buyer in BiH is someone looking for a modern car with low fuel consumption at a reasonable price. If they understand that the timing chain needs attention, they get a solid car for everyday use. In our workshop we most often see examples with 80,000-150,000 km coming in for their first serious diagnostic check after the warranty has expired.
Common faults we see
From our hands-on experience, here is what most commonly comes in for repair on this model.
1. Timing chain and tensioner
Symptom: Metallic rattling on cold start lasting 2-5 seconds, power loss, rough running, check engine light.
The original chain tensioner lacks a seal that would retain oil when the engine is switched off. The oil drains away, the chain loses tension, and on every start-up it slaps around until oil pressure builds up. Repeated slapping stretches the chain and wears down the plastic guides. The problem can appear as early as 80,000-100,000 km on earlier production runs. If ignored, the chain can skip and cause catastrophic engine damage.
Advice: If you hear rattling on cold start lasting more than a second, get a diagnostic check straight away. Do not replace just the tensioner - always fit a complete kit with chain, guides and the improved tensioner with a seal.
2. DPF filter - clogging
Symptom: Warning on the dashboard, power loss, increased fuel consumption, engine enters limp mode.
Short city trips do not allow DPF filter regeneration. Engine oil gets contaminated with fuel from failed regeneration attempts, which in turn accelerates wear on the turbocharger and engine bearings. On the 1.6 CDTI engine, regeneration requires a longer drive on the open road at higher revs.
Advice: Drive for at least 20-30 minutes on the open road once a week. If the DPF light is flashing, do not switch off the engine - keep driving until regeneration is complete. Use low-ash oil (dexos2).
3. EGR valve - carbon build-up
Symptom: Jerking during acceleration, unstable idle, check engine light, increased fuel consumption, black smoke.
The EGR valve on the 1.6 CDTI gets fouled by accumulated soot particles, especially during city driving with frequent stops. A stuck EGR valve can remain open or closed - both scenarios disrupt engine operation. The problem typically appears between 80,000 and 150,000 km.
Advice: Cleaning the EGR valve is the first option and often solves the problem. If the valve is mechanically worn, replacement is the only solution. We do not recommend software deletion of the EGR as it can cause problems at the MOT inspection.
4. Turbocharger - wear and oil leaks
Symptom: Power loss during acceleration, whistling or squealing from the engine bay, blue smoke from the exhaust, increased oil consumption.
The turbocharger on the B16DTE/B16DTH engine suffers the consequences of contaminated oil (from failed DPF regenerations) and extended oil change intervals. Turbo bearings wear faster if the oil is not the correct specification or if the engine is switched off immediately after hard driving without a cool-down idle period.
Advice: After motorway or uphill driving, let the engine idle for 30-60 seconds before switching off. Use only dexos2-specification oil. Check the oil level at least once a month.
5. High-pressure fuel pump
Symptom: Difficult starting, engine stalling while driving, power loss under heavy load, prolonged cranking.
The high-pressure fuel pump on the 1.6 CDTI loses efficiency after 120,000-180,000 km, especially if lower-quality fuel has been used. Worn internal components cannot maintain the required pressure in the common rail system, leading to incomplete combustion.
Advice: Fill up at reputable fuel stations. If you notice the engine is harder to start or loses power under load, a fuel pressure diagnostic will reveal the problem before it becomes critical.
6. Start-stop system - failure
Symptom: Start-stop system does not activate, warning message on the dashboard, more frequent battery drain.
On models from 2017 onwards, the start-stop system often stops working after 40,000-60,000 km. The most common causes are a worn AGM battery that cannot hold the required voltage, a faulty battery state sensor (IBS), or a software error in the control unit. The system is sensitive to both high and low temperatures.
Advice: Start-stop requires an AGM battery - a standard battery will not work. If the system stops working but the battery is fine, check the IBS sensor on the negative battery terminal.
7. Engine mounts
Symptom: Vibrations in the cabin at idle, thumping during sharp acceleration or braking, noticeable steering wheel shudder.
The right-hand engine mount on the Astra K wears out relatively quickly, especially in city driving with frequent speed changes. A worn mount fails to absorb the vibrations of the diesel engine, so they transfer to the body. The problem usually appears after 80,000-120,000 km.
Advice: A visual inspection of the engine mounts is part of our regular service. If you notice increased cabin vibrations that were not there before, the mounts are the prime suspect.
8. Shock absorbers and springs - premature wear
Symptom: Instability in corners, banging over potholes, uneven tyre wear, the car "wallows" after going over a bump.
The front shock absorbers on the Astra K wear out faster than on previous generations, partly due to the lower vehicle weight and different geometry. On Bosnian roads the problem is amplified - shocks that would last 100,000 km in Germany wear out in 60,000-80,000 km here. Springs can also crack, especially the rears.
Advice: Have the shock absorbers checked at every annual service. Replacing in pairs (left and right) is mandatory - never replace just one.
Astra K 1.6 CDTI timing chain symptoms
A typical symptom of a worn timing chain on the Astra K is a brief metallic rattle from the front of the engine on cold start. The sound lasts 1-5 seconds and disappears once oil pressure builds up. Many owners ignore this because the engine runs normally afterwards, but every such start-up stretches the chain further. Another symptom is rough idle - a slight shudder that gets worse with mileage. In advanced cases, the check engine light comes on with faults related to camshaft-crankshaft correlation (typically P0016 or P0017). GM later offered an improved tensioner with a seal (part number varies by model year), which solves the oil drain-back problem when the engine is off.
Opel Astra K DPF regeneration problems
DPF regeneration on the 1.6 CDTI requires specific conditions: exhaust gas temperature must be high enough, which is achieved by driving at 2,000-2,500 rpm on the open road for 15-30 minutes. If you mostly drive short city trips (5-10 km commutes), the DPF never reaches the required temperature. The control unit attempts a forced regeneration by injecting extra fuel, but if the engine is switched off before completion, the fuel ends up in the oil. The result is diluted oil that does not lubricate the engine properly, and the level on the dipstick rises instead of falling. That is a sure sign you need an oil change and a longer drive out of the city. If the DPF light comes on regularly, a back-pressure diagnostic shows how blocked the filter really is and whether cleaning is sufficient or replacement is needed.
Service and maintenance
The 1.6 CDTI engine uses a timing chain with no prescribed replacement interval, but we recommend checking its condition every 60,000-80,000 km and replacing the complete kit (chain, tensioner, guides) by 120,000-150,000 km at the latest, depending on driving conditions and tensioner condition. Change oil every 10,000-15,000 km or once a year, specification dexos2 (recommended 5W-30), with shorter intervals for predominantly city driving. The DPF filter requires occasional longer drives out of the city. Replace the fuel filter every 25,000-30,000 km - this is crucial for protecting the high-pressure fuel pump.
Which oil for Opel Astra K 1.6 CDTI
The prescribed specification for the 1.6 CDTI engine is dexos2, with a recommended viscosity of 5W-30. This oil has low ash content, which is important for longer DPF filter life. Avoid longlife intervals of 30,000 km that some importers prescribe - in Bosnian conditions (city driving, dust, frequent short trips) the oil should be changed every 10,000-15,000 km. If you notice the oil level on the dipstick rising between services, fuel is getting into the oil through failed DPF regenerations and an urgent oil change with a shortened next interval is needed.
Owner tips
- Listen to the cold start every morning. If you notice metallic rattling lasting more than a second, book a timing chain diagnostic without delay.
- Check the history before putting down a deposit: use the chassis number to pull the full vehicle history through carVertical. From international registries you get actual odometer readings by date, recorded accidents, number of previous owners and indicators of theft or total loss. We consider this essential before buying any used car, especially with German imports which make up the bulk of Astra K stock on the market. When paying for a report you can use the code GAGA for a 20% discount.
- Use only dexos2-specification oil (5W-30) and change it every 10,000-15,000 km maximum or once a year, depending on driving conditions.
- Once a week, drive for at least 20-30 minutes on the open road at higher revs so the DPF filter can carry out regeneration.
- Do not switch off the engine immediately after hard motorway driving. Let it idle for 30-60 seconds so the turbocharger can cool down.
- Check the engine oil level at least once a month. If the level is rising rather than falling, fuel is getting into the oil through failed DPF regenerations - this is a serious problem that requires urgent attention.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Opel Astra K 1.6 CDTI a reliable car?
The Astra K is a reasonably reliable car if properly maintained. The key is to monitor the timing chain condition and not skip service intervals. Most owners who maintain their car according to recommendations drive without major issues up to 200,000 km. Problems arise when cold-start rattling is ignored or services are postponed.
How much does a timing chain replacement cost on the Astra K?
Replacing the complete timing chain kit (chain, tensioner with seal, guides, gaskets) requires removing the engine or extensive disassembly of the front end, which is a major job. The cost depends on the specific condition - get in touch for an estimate.
Which engine is the better choice on the Astra K - 110 or 136 HP?
For most drivers in BiH the B16DTE with 110 HP is perfectly adequate - it is economical and has enough power for everyday driving. The B16DTH with 136 HP is a better choice for those who frequently drive on motorways or tow a trailer. Both engines share the same potential timing chain issue, so there is no difference there.
Is it worth fitting LPG to the Astra K 1.6 CDTI?
Fitting LPG to a diesel engine is not possible in the conventional sense. A diesel-gas system that uses LPG as a supplementary fuel does exist, but on modern diesel engines like the 1.6 CDTI with a common rail system and DPF filter it is not recommended as it can cause problems with the particulate filter.
What to watch out for when buying a used Astra K?
First, listen to the cold start - any rattling in the first few seconds points to a worn timing chain tensioner. Check the service history and whether the chain has already been replaced. Run a DPF status diagnostic, check the oil level and condition (fuel-diluted oil is a sign of a serious problem), and make sure you take it for a test drive of at least 15 minutes.
What fuel consumption does the Astra K 1.6 CDTI achieve in practice?
In real-world BiH conditions expect 5.5-6.5 litres per 100 km in mixed driving. Pure city driving with frequent stops can push consumption to 7-7.5 litres. On the open road consumption drops below 5 litres, which is an excellent result for a car of this size.
If you notice any of these symptoms, drop by the workshop - it is better to check early than to pay for an expensive repair.
