How to Write a Used Car Ad on OLX.ba in 2026

Complete guide to writing an OLX.ba used car ad in 2026: proper title, 15-20 photos, honest description, and why 'price negotiable' kills your listing.

On OLX.ba, roughly 450 vehicles sell every day — a measure of just how much competition jostles with your ad in the same category. The difference between a listing that sells a car in a week and one that lingers for two months is almost never the price; it comes down to the title, the photos, and how the ad appears in search during the first 24 hours. This guide is a complete practical handbook for writing an OLX car ad in 2026, covering all new portal features and a concrete template you can copy and adapt.

This guide was compiled by the Auto Gas Gaga workshop in Banja Luka, drawing on years of experience with pre-purchase inspections and conversations with hundreds of owners who sold used cars via OLX.ba.

This article is part of a series of guides on selling a used car in BiH in 2026. The full plan — from preparing the vehicle and setting the price, through writing a quality OLX ad and notarising the sales contract, to negotiating and protecting yourself from scams at handover — with comparison tables, detailed real-world examples, and links to each step, can be found in the complete guide to selling a used car in BiH 2026.

Why OLX.ba and what you need to know before posting

OLX.ba is effectively the only serious platform for selling a used car privately in BiH. Dealers exist, but they take a significant margin for something you can do yourself in seven to fourteen days if you put the ad together properly. Competition is broad — hundreds of new listings daily in the car category and around 450 vehicles sold per day show how quickly a good ad moves on.

Before you open the new-ad form, two things must be done. First, the car must be ready for sale — washed inside and out, with minor visible faults fixed (a blown bulb, scratched wiper disc, empty washer reservoir). Second, you need to know your realistic price, because the price in the ad is not the same as the amount you need at the end.

A third thing worth having ready: the car's VIN number. OLX's new ad form automatically fills in the manufacturer, model, year, fuel type, engine displacement, power output, gearbox, and number of doors when you enter the VIN. This saves you time and reduces the chance of a wrong technical field that hides your listing from the right buyers. You can find the VIN on the registration document, in the corner of the windscreen, or on the sticker inside the driver's door frame.

If you are selling a car and the whole process is new to you, have a look at our complete guide to selling a used car in BiH 2026 before continuing. There you get a broader step-by-step picture, while this article fills in that one step — the ad — with details that could not fit in the wider guide.

Ad title - rules most sellers break

The title is the only thing a potential buyer sees while scrolling through search results alongside fifty other similar listings. If the title does not make it into the first round of search results, everything else — photos, description, price — has no one to see it.

OLX's official recommendation, which most sellers ignore, is: put only the manufacturer and model in the title, plus the key engine variant and power if needed, in nominative form. The reason is technical and logical. A buyer types "Volkswagen Golf 7" or "Škoda Octavia 2.0 TDI" into the search bar, not "selling Golf" or "urgent small Golf". Search is oriented towards the brand + model format and nominative case, so a title with a declined noun ("selling my Golf, excellent") performs worse than one without ("Volkswagen Golf 7 diesel TDI 110 kW").

How to name the car in an OLX ad title

A practical title template that works:

[Manufacturer] [Model] [Generation or year] [Fuel] [Engine variant] [Optional: kW/HP]

Specific examples:

  • Volkswagen Golf 7 1.6 TDI 81 kW
  • Škoda Octavia 3 2.0 TDI DSG
  • Opel Astra J 1.4 petrol
  • BMW 320d E90 facelift automatic
  • Peugeot 308 SW 1.6 HDi

What not to put in the title: emojis, all-caps shouting ("SALE"), words like "urgent", "bargain", "well-maintained", "top condition", "first owner". That information belongs in the description, not the title. The title has a limited character count, and search does not read those as keywords — they just push the make and model closer to the end, where they get cut off.

Another common mistake: putting the price in the title. Price has its own field, search has its own price filters, so a price in the title only wastes characters. The same applies to the city — location has its own field and buyers filter geographically via the map, not via the title.

Photos - how many, in what order, and how (proven template)

Photos do the heaviest lifting in an ad — the buyer scrolls fast, opens a listing because of the title and the first two or three images, and only then reads the description. If the first three photos are not clear and good, the buyer returns to search results within five seconds.

How many photos to include in a car ad

The consensus from regional guides, and what works in practice: 15 to 20 photographs, or as many as the platform allows. More is not better if you repeat yourself, but fewer than 12 makes it look like something is being hidden.

The best time to photograph is during the day with natural light, ideally on an overcast day with no harsh shadows, or early morning and late afternoon. Direct midday sun produces hard shadows and glare spots on the paintwork — it visually ruins even a well-kept car.

Location: a neutral background without other cars in the frame. A driveway or empty car park is ideal, not a street with parked cars intruding into the shot. Do not photograph in front of your house or anywhere with a personally identifiable business in the background.

Camera position: at headlight height, not from above. Shooting from above gives a composition that looks like a nineties dealership ad, while a low camera at headlight height gives a balanced, professional frame.

Proven order for 15-20 photographs

The order matters because the buyer sees the first few images in the search preview:

  1. Front three-quarter (three quarters from the front, slightly left) — this is the main photo used as the thumbnail.
  2. Rear three-quarter (three quarters from the back, from the other side).
  3. Side - left straight on in profile.
  4. Side - right straight on in profile.
  5. Front straight on.
  6. Rear straight on. 7-8. Dashboard — one with the ignition on (showing the mileage clearly, no warning lights) and one showing the full cockpit.
  7. Steering wheel and controls close-up. 10-11. Front seats and rear seats.
  8. Boot open with the spare wheel, if you have one.
  9. Engine — bonnet open, clean. 14-17. All four wheels close-up — one by one, showing tyre and rim condition. 18-20. All existing damage — a scratch on the bumper, a small dent on a door, a stain on a seat. Everything you mention in the description should also be photographed.

How to hide the number plate in OLX photos

OLX.ba has a built-in option for masking registration plates on uploaded photos. With a single click you cover the plate, without any post-processing in Photoshop. Use this option — a registration plate provides information no one in the ad needs (location, the owner's name via a police query, potential misuse of the image) and harms your privacy.

Vehicle description - what to include and what to avoid

Technical fields (year, fuel, mileage, power, gearbox, number of doors) go into OLX's structured fields — do not repeat them in the text description. The description is for everything else: the car's story, equipment not visible in photos, a list of defects, and a call to contact.

Description template that works

Use this framework, fill in your own data, and adapt the style:

Selling [make, model, year] in good condition.

The car is [first owner / second owner / third owner]
and was [bought new in BiH / imported from Germany 2018 / imported from Italy 2020].

Service history: [regularly serviced at an authorised dealer /
regularly serviced at an independent workshop with receipts / partially documented].

Current mileage: [from the instrument cluster, not approximate].

What was recently replaced (with approximate km or dates):
- Oil and oil filter, [date / km]
- Fuel filter, [date / km]
- Timing belt kit (or chain), [date / km]
- Battery, [date / km]
- Tyres - summer [brand, year], winter [brand, year]
- [other: pads, discs, shock absorbers, etc.]

Equipment:
- Air conditioning [manual / automatic]
- Cruise control
- Parking sensors [front / rear / both]

- [other specific to the car]

Defects - honestly:
- [e.g. Scratch on the front bumper, right side, about 5 cm]
- [e.g. Minor corrosion on the sill, left side]
- [e.g. Pollen filter not changed for the last 30,000 km]

Reason for selling: [brief - upgrading to a larger car, moving abroad, no longer needed].

The car can be viewed and test-driven in [city].
Contact by phone call only; I do not respond to "is it still available?" messages.
Price is firm / small discount for a quick deal / not negotiable.

What must not be in a car description on OLX

  • No false claims about service history. If you have no receipts, do not write "regularly serviced at an authorised dealer". A false description kills the sale when the buyer discovers the opposite during an inspection.
  • No "the car is in perfect condition" or "like new". A used car with 180,000 km is not new and the buyer knows it — those phrases signal you are not a serious seller.
  • No personal email address or phone number in the description — OLX has a contact field, and numbers in the description are sometimes flagged as spam.
  • No price in the description if you have already entered it in the price field — repetition creates confusion if you later lower the price but the old description still shows the old one.
  • No links to other ads or websites — OLX removes them and may take down the ad.
  • No notes like "serious offers only" or "don't call if you can't negotiate" — they scare off serious buyers, signalling you are difficult to deal with.

Honestly listing defects

Honestly listing defects in the ad increases buyer trust and chances of a sale. Hiding information that a buyer discovers only at the viewing usually kills the deal and means both parties wasted two hours of travel. If the car has minor rust on a sill, minor damage on the front bumper, or a faulty air conditioning unit awaiting repair — write it. A buyer who arrives prepared for those defects will hardly negotiate on price, while a buyer who discovers them unexpectedly will demand a significant discount or walk away on the spot.

Price in the ad - how to set it and avoid the 'negotiable' trap

Price is an uncertain topic, but one rule is absolute: "price negotiable" kills the ad. The reason is technical, not psychological. OLX.ba search has a price filter that buyers actively use (for example "car up to eight thousand" or "Golf up to twelve thousand"). Ads with a price of "negotiable" or "on enquiry" do not appear in results when a buyer filters by range. You are removing yourself from half of all searches the moment you decide not to state a price.

The technique that works in practice: set the price 5 to 15 percent above the amount you actually need. A buyer who comes to view will almost always negotiate something, and lowering the price during the conversation gives them the feeling they got a discount. If you need a particular target amount, list the ad at around 5-10 percent above it. A realistic buyer will offer something lower, you agree at your target figure, and both sides are satisfied.

What not to do:

  • Set the price far above the market (say, half again above realistic) expecting it will "come down during the conversation". Such ads never reach serious buyers because the filter excludes them, and while you hold the price high, the ad burns activation days and drops in search.
  • Change the price up and down daily — this is visible in the ad history and signals nervousness, which invites more aggressive negotiation.
  • Figures like "nine thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine" to sneak below a popular filter — buyers see it and think of you as a dealer.

How to realistically determine the price — that is the subject of our guide to setting a realistic used car price in BiH, the next article in this series. In brief: search OLX for your make, model, engine variant, and similar mileage, pull up the 5-10 most similar listings, subtract 5-10 percent from the highest (because those never sell at the listed price), and you have your realistic range.

Activation and promotion - 15, 30 or 90 days plus premium

OLX's ad activation system for cars in 2026:

OLX ad activation - 15, 30 or 90 days

A vehicle ad is activated for 15, 30 or 90 days. The first 5 days are free with every new listing — enough to see whether the ad attracts contacts in the first wave. After those free five days, if you want the ad to stay active, you activate it by purchasing a 15, 30, or 90-day package. Payment is made with OLX credits purchased in advance.

Longer packages offer significant savings per day compared to shorter ones. OLX PRO and OLX SHOPS users get additional discounts on activations and promotions, which is relevant only if you sell vehicles regularly (e.g. brokers and small dealerships); for a private seller with one car it is not economically worthwhile.

The actual KM prices for activation are dynamic and change from time to time — the portal updates them seasonally. You see the exact amount at the point of purchasing credits or at the moment of activation, on the ad itself. Our recommendation is to check the price at that point, because fixed figures from other people's old articles are unreliable.

Price of a promoted ad on OLX

Besides the basic activation, OLX has a promotion (premium positioning) option. A promoted ad appears at the top of search results, with a visible badge, and gets markedly higher traffic in the first day or two. The promotion price is dynamic — it depends on the number of active ads in the category and the number of promotion days. The exact amount is displayed when selecting the promotion option on the ad itself, before you confirm payment.

Practical logic for a private seller:

  • First five free activation days: do not pay for promotion. If you get 3-5 serious calls during that time, the data is good — buyers are seeing it.
  • If there were no calls after five days, before paying for promotion reconsider the title, photos, and price. Premium positioning does not fix a bad ad — it just pushes it in front of more buyers who also leave.
  • Promotion makes sense around day 7-14 when the ad starts dropping in search, or before the weekend when most people get in touch.
  • The 30-day package is typically the best choice for a private seller. 15 days is too short for most cars unless the price is exceptionally attractive; 90 days signals you do not expect a quick sale, which buyers sense.

How to rank in OLX search and attract buyers

Ranking on OLX is not a mystery. Several factors work consistently in practice:

Ad freshness. New ads appear high for the first day or two. After that they drop in results as new ads in the same category arrive. This is why promotion on day 7-14 has the greatest effect — that is when competition hides you most.

Accuracy of technical fields. When a buyer filters "Volkswagen Golf, diesel, 100-130 kW, 2014-2017", only ads with those exact data in OLX's structure appear. This is why VIN auto-fill matters — manual entry often contains an error (e.g. 81 kW instead of 110 kW), so search skips you even for buyers who were specifically looking for your engine.

Number of photos and quality of the main photo. Ads with 12 or more photos get noticeably more clicks than those with four or five. The main photo (front three-quarter, well-lit) decides whether a buyer even opens the ad.

Accurate description and absence of spam signals. A false make in the description, phrases like "I don't respond to messages", "serious offers only", phone numbers in the description — all of this lowers the ad's quality in OLX's internal signals.

Activity on the ad. Ads where the owner responds regularly (to messages on the portal, to calls) rank better than ads where the owner ignores half the enquiries. Check the portal once a day during active selling.

What does not work for ranking, although often believed:

  • Changing the price up and down "to refresh the ad" — does not help ranking, only signals nervousness.
  • Deleting and re-posting the same ad — OLX recognises it is the same car, you lose points from the old ad, and spent credits are not refunded.
  • Over-frequent "pinging" via promotion — promoting multiple times in quick succession does not add proportionally more views.

Communicating with buyers - calls, messages, and arranging viewings

A quality ad means 10 to 30 contacts in the first seven days. Of those, realistically 5 to 10 are serious (the rest are curious, brokers with a low "for resale" offer, or people not yet ready to buy). Your job is to filter out the unserious within the first two minutes of conversation and qualify the serious ones.

Standard questions and how to respond

  • "Is the car still for sale?" — a brief "Yes" and a question back: "What specifically interests you?" You immediately see whether the buyer has read the ad or is sending the same message to thirty listings.
  • "Can you do a discount?" in a message with no context — do not enter negotiation via message. Reply: "We discuss the price after a viewing and test drive. I am open to a deal within reasonable bounds."
  • "What's the lowest price?" — same approach. The price is agreed in person, not via a message from someone you have never met.
  • "Can I come and see it in half an hour?" — a good sign of seriousness. Agree on an exact time and location.

What to tell the buyer before they come for a viewing

When the buyer confirms they are coming, send them:

  • The exact address and a brief orientation description.
  • The car's VIN (if they have not checked it yet — a serious buyer will check it).
  • A note to bring an ID card in case the contract is to be signed on the same day.

If the buyer is coming from another city, ask them a few hours beforehand to confirm — a good number of buyers cancel at the last minute.

Pre-purchase inspection at a workshop

An increasing number of serious used-car buyers ask to see the car at a workshop before purchasing. This is a good sign for the seller — the buyer is willing to pay for an inspection at an independent workshop precisely because they are serious about buying. Do not refuse this request. Refusing an inspection at an independent mechanic is a clear signal to most buyers that you are hiding something, so they walk away even if the car has no issues.

On the contrary, if you yourself agree to a workshop inspection before the buyer even suggests it, you build trust. At Auto Gas Gaga we frequently carry out pre-purchase inspections of used cars, and in practice a good seller strategy is for the owner to come in for a quick inspection before posting the ad — that way you know exactly what to tell buyers honestly and what the inspection will find.

One great ad, not five mediocre ones

It is better to invest three hours in one ad that is technically accurate, with 18 good photos, an honest description, and a realistic price, than five rushed ads for the same car with different prices on different accounts. OLX detects duplicates and penalises them, but far worse is the reputational consequence — buyers move in the same pool and recognise the same photos, then walk away out of distrust.

If you want to offer buyers extra confidence before posting the ad, book a pre-purchase inspection at our workshop — it is much easier to write an honest description when an independent mechanic has confirmed what is good and what you will tell the buyer face to face.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to post a car ad on OLX.ba in 2026?

The first 5 days are free for every new vehicle listing. After that, the ad is activated for 15, 30, or 90 days with a package you pay for using OLX credits. The actual KM prices are dynamic and change seasonally, so check the exact amount when purchasing credits or at the moment of activation on the ad itself. Longer packages have a lower price per day.

How many photos are optimal for a car ad?

15 to 20 photographs is the right range in practice. Fewer than 12 makes it look like something is being hidden; more than 20 means you are repeating yourself (the same perspective from two angles, for example). What matters most is that the first five or six photos are very high quality, because in search the buyer sees the title and thumbnail, opens the ad because of those first few, and only then scrolls further.

Do I have to state a price or can I put 'negotiable'?

You must state a price if you want search to show you to serious buyers at all. OLX search has a price filter that buyers actively use, and ads marked "negotiable" do not appear in those results. "Negotiable" is a technical mistake, not a strategy - it reduces impressions by 40-60 percent depending on the category.

What if the buyer wants an inspection at an independent workshop?

Agree to it. Serious used-car buyers often request a pre-purchase inspection before putting down a deposit, and it is a clear signal they are serious about buying, not an attempt at extortion. Refusing an inspection at a mechanic is, for most buyers, a reason to walk away, because they interpret it as concealing a defect. An inspection typically takes 30-60 minutes and the buyer pays for it.

How do I hide the registration plate in ad photos?

OLX.ba has a built-in option for masking registration plates when uploading photos to the portal. With a single click you cover the plate, without using Photoshop or other software. The feature is available directly in the ad submission form, on each uploaded image.

Is it better to post an ad during the week or at the weekend?

The most views come on Friday afternoon, Saturday, and Sunday morning - when people have time to browse cars. Ideally, post the ad on Thursday or Friday before noon so it enters the weekend as a "new ad" with freshness in search. Promotion, if you opt for it, has the greatest effect when activated on Friday afternoon.
